Hello,
I was wondering for those of you with Crohn's in Australia which painkiller available in australia do you find is most effective?!

Kind regards Nathan

My kids were prescribed Endone out of hospital and Morphine in hospital. For them it was quite effective but to be honest the only thing that provided lasting pain free relief was remission.

I know,
Dusty I would love to be in remission, that would be ideal, but I'm not sure if this makes sense but I have a long family history of Crohn's disease in my familly( so for me it's definaitly genetic) because my father and great grandfather had it, And it makes me really depressed because the type of crohns in my familly seems to be very sever and very active and seems to never go into remission, my father has sever crohns he has had 3 re sections aswell as an operation to remove kidney stones, so with a family histpry of having such sever and active Crohn's disease without going into remission is really depressing because if that's not bad enough my great-grandfather and my father both got it when they where 20 and 19 respectively whereas I got mine when I was only 15 :(!! So I got it early I'm now 17 and I have personally witnessed my dad going into remission in my whole life :( so I feel like sadly the only relief I'm ever going to get is from painkillers there the only reason I can get out of bed in the morning without them I wouldn't know what to do:(?!

The meds for crohn's have drastically changed in the past ten years alone .
I don't see any crohn's meds in your list .
I agree with Dusty trying to achieve remission is best .
Have you tried biologics ?

It surely is a catch 22 Nathan. :(

I sensed that much of your anxiety may stem from having witnessed what your Dad has been through coupled from what appears to be your own difficult course thus far.

Are the pain killers working for you at present?
It is a perfectly natural question to ask what others have found works for them but bear in mind that what works wonders for one doesn’t necessarily equate to working well for another. Also when you have chronic pain you may find that being pain free is an unrealistic goal and expecting it will only mean setting yourself up for failure, which then will feed into your anxiety and depression. :( The best thing to aim for is greatly reduced and controlled pain that allows you to function from day to day, that is not to say you can’t or won’t have pain free episodes but don’t expect to be like that all the time. As to the here and now? You need to do what you must to get through the day.

While ever you have under treated flaring Crohn’s with pain as a symptom the pain will be challenging to control on a day to day basis. Also ongoing inflammation will continue to cause damage and the cycle of pain will remain unbroken.

I think the sooner you to move to Remicade the better, you really need to try and get this under control. Of course it goes without saying that you want that also so get onto the GI and start pushing for better management.

Thanks dusty and my little penguin,
I have tried conventional crohns medications but they have all failed I have had 50mg prendisone which didn't cure my flair or help it in any way only got nasty side affects, Mercapterpurine 75mg I was violently allergic to so I had to stop treatment after 5 days, Budenafalk 6mg didn't help, Salafalk 1500mg didn't help. I also go to a pyciatrist weekly because I have pycological problems.... Yes you red correctly I go to 3 different doctors a month and I'm only 17... Anyway my pyciatrist diagnosed me with Panic disorder and General Anxiety disorder so my pyciatrist which is very good perscribed me 20mg Prozac for my anxiety and it really seems to be helping... Which is great because I am glad that I was able to avoid using Benzodiazapines for anxiety like Valium or Xanax etc because there addictive and very hard to get off of and I already have to take painkillers which are addictive so I don't want a second addictive drug to add to he cocktail :(?! Oh and p.s I don't have depresion thank goodness!! I just have anxiety but sometimes I do get a little bit sad :( but then I think of the bright side of things and I feel better :)

I agree with Dusty that it may not be realistic to expect total pain relief, but you're also right that remission isn't always achievable in every case either.

I take codeine and it's the best pain relief I've found, though I can't deny that tolerance and addiction are proving big problems. Nevertheless, I still feel a lot better taking it regularly than not - I've come off it several times, given it long enough that withdrawal is no longer an issue, yet I still feel noticeably worse off it than on, though not just in regards to pain. In this country at least (the UK) you won't get anything much stronger than codeine outside of hospital unless under exceptional circumstances. If codeine and oxycotin aren't enough, you're probably going to have to look for ways of dealing with pain besides conventional pain killers (though they may still have a place in treating your paint too).

Finding effective pain relief depends a lot on finding the right type of treatment for your type of pain. Some simple things can be surprisingly effective, for example, holding a hot water bottle on a cramping stomach can help because the warmth relaxes your muscles. Adjusting your diet may help with digestive pain. What type of pain do you have? Have you noticed whether anything makes it better or worse?
