Hey i was just diagnosed with crohns about 5 months ago and i have only drank twice since i was told i had it. The first time i drank half a 26 ounce bottle of wisers and i almost died the next day. The second time was a few days ago i had a few mixed drinks ( gin and diet gingerale ) and the next day was a little rough but nothing compaired to the wisers lol.

Im just wondering if any of you still attempt to drink alcohol or if it even bothers you? and what is the best / safest thing to drink for my poor intestines lol?

Beer really bothers me, but then again I pretty much hate most beer anyway. Yeah, I know, that's jest un-uh-frickin-mercan. Meh.

Beer has a lot of yeast-born carbonation in it that can create a lot of gas and bloating and pain, so I steer clear of a lot of carbonated alcohols and those malt liquor crap beverages.

I drink on occasion. Hard liquor mostly. Irish whiskey, bourbon, Irish Mist, brandy...a little peach moonshine. Rum. Yeah. Usually don't go too nuts though. Occasionally I'll hit it hard. My bowels aren't too nasty afterward. I get what a guy I knew working for Kroger called the squirts when I overdo it, but no major pain or anything. As for safe, I'd say none of it's really safe, I think it kills bacteria in your system, both good and bad and leeches certain vitamins, but try some stuff and don't overdo it.

I also drink wine on occasion and LOVE honey mead.

alright thanks for your input Dan. Im gonna try the gin with gingerale combo tonight and see how it goes lol. Im on prednisone atm too tho. So im not too sure how that will go. But ill give it a shot and try not to over do it :p

I didn't drink a lot before I was diagnosed, but in the two years prior to diagnoses when I was feeling like crap I'd have a margarita or two and it was no problem.

I don't drink now because I thought I wasn't supposed to due to the meds. It's just Pentasa and Entocourt. So I guess I'm saying that the meds have limited my drinking rather than the disease.

Yeah, some of the meds may lose efficacy or could have side effects when coupled with alcohol. Good to check first. I'm pretty much just on Pentasa right now and haven't had much problems, but as far as the disease is concerned, YMMV. What seems no problem for one person ends up being a real issue for someone else. And my Crohns I would probably describe as mild at the moment.

I think it must be a matter of course that if you take a medicine they will tell you not to drink alcohol. I'm not so sure they really have any idea of what happens when you drink and take a particular drug, they just warn you off in order to cover their asses.

O man beer kills me, which sucks cause I like beer :-(, but I've found that pretty much any hard alcohol is ok, my favoite drink is Bacardi 151 & diet Dr. pepper and its not rough at all the next day

12oz cup
3 ice cubes
2 2oz shots of 151
7oz of Diet Dr. pepper
enjoy :)

thanks for the input guys. I drank a good amount lastnight and woke up dehydrated like usual but i didnt run to the washroom and i havnt been in there all morning so its looking good! im pretty happy so far. I drank gin, diet ginger ale and i tossed a jolly rancher in my cup and it gave it some amazing flavour haha. Yeah lasttime i drank 2 beers my stomach was destroyed the next day..

i don't drink alcohol very often, can go for months without any, but sometimes i do fancy a JD & coke or a baileys.. if i have one drink i am ok, but more than that i get drunk very quickly, feel rotten, and the bad feeling continues till the next day.

hence, i am usually the driver when we go out lol

i can't tolerate any quantity of alcohol... if i'm feeling adventurous, i might have a glass of wine, and that's maybe twice a year. beer is the worst...

i do miss being able to drink, but considering how ill it makes me, i'm willing to live without it. even in my younger days, i wasn't much of a drinker, so it's not so bad.

Mmmm.... I don't think I need to say much, my avatar says it all really. ;)

But seriously, alcohol never bothers me. maybe my body is just used to it.

I can tolerate it.
wine is the best for me which is good b/c i LOVE wine.
i also drink beer but it gives me gas but helps me relieve constipation.

I have drank a lot while having Crohns and the only thing that bothered me was beer because it made me so bloated and gassy. So I mainly drank liqour.

But i have been sober for a year and a half because I am on prednisone and pain meds all the time now, so I decided to try and just focus on my health. I also quit smoking cigs. as well.

I do drink when I am feeling good. I found I can drink everyday as long as I keep it to one or two of waterever, if I drink too much I pay for it. When the wife and I have overindulged, we fight to see who goes to the bathroom more the next day...and she has no illnesses, too much alcohol hurts everyone.

Right now between feeling bad and the flagyl I can't drink. Boy Danman that Guinness looks the perfect thing to get rid of this metal taste!

Haha, had yourself a piña colada?

I've never actually drank much alcohol myself, because I've always been a bit nervous to find out how my disease would react to it. So at the few parties I've been to, I just drink the "light" stuff. Like Smirnoff's Ice, haha.

well that is actually probably one of the worst things you could drink cause its like all sugar haha I don't drink much but when I do i make up for when I don't lol and no pina colada's for me just 151 shots and 151 and diet dr. pepper lol

only time i ever drank was a couple years ago my dad made some beastly mudslides. i felt like hell. and never again, no matter WHAT party i was at.

those little labels on flagyl and methotrex that say dont drink? yeah, they aint lyin.

I can drink it, but then I pay - lol does that mean I can't drink it??
I get horrible burning around my belly button. Does anyone else experience this?

I've found the following have low impact on my crohns.

Gin N Tonic.
Whiskey on the rocks. (miss chasing it with Coke :( )

And now a new contender, I've had a six pack of this beer with no issues.

Asahi Super Dry Beer

asahi.jpg

After quite a bit of research, found this that made me try it out :

In fermentation, yeast changes the available brewing sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Asahi created dry beer by fermenting beer longer and more thoroughly, decreasing the sugars left at the end of the fermentation, increasing alcohol and carbonation, to produce a beer with a lighter body and drier taste.

not much of a drinker anymore, 1 or 2 and i'm getting tipsy.... yeah i know i'm a cheap drunk now... kinda sucks.

I don't drink. I had a glass of win about 2 years ago and I did not like how it felt. My niece wanted me to sip a new drink of hers this wekend and I didn't. I just don't want anything that's not good for me. I was sick for too long. A little drink here or there is not worth it. I will take good health any day.

So I know HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) is what is the real nasty bugger for me, so I gave up soft drinks long ago. I cheat every now and then and enjoy a tasty root beer, and often regret it later.

Well, one thing that is always in the stores down here that I keep looking over is Coke from Mexico - sold as "Mexican Coke". This is THE "Classic Coke" formula, those around 30's and older will know what I mean. Mexico didn't give two bits about the whole HFCS change over, and contiued to make their coke with pure sugar - and still do to this day.

Well, I had one last night. no problems on any level.

So I may just have my new chaser for Whiskey which didn't give me trouble either.

Doubt many of you can get your hands on it though :/

Ummm....I'm kind of a drunk LOL I go out with a group of friends every Thursday & drink. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not so much. I usually get really bad heartburn...OUCH! But it's soooo worth it!

Ha! My kind of gal.

Beer wreaks havoc on me. I pay for it in spades the next day so I've sworn off it. If I drink more than 2 glasses of red wine, I'm also toast.

So, I stick to the hard stuff. My drink of the summer has been a French 75 (equal parts gin, lemon juice, champagne with a dash of sugar). Mmmmmmmmmm.

Here in Ireland, that would be seen as normal behaviour Jillian.

We often go out for nights out with friends, sometimes I think that the US attitude to drink is a little over the top. You feel you have to apologise for going out once a week?
The EU recently stated that anything more than 2 drinks is binge-drinking. If that is the case, most Europeans binge on a regular basis every week.

I would go out to my local pub about once every 2 weeks, I'd have about 7-8 pints of beer over about 4-5 hours. We might go out for a meal on other occasions and I'd have a few drinks then as well. I wouldn't consider myself a drunk.
I don't crave alchohol in between times, I know when I've had enough when I do drink.

Trust me Dan, when it comes to alcohol, I do not apoligize at ALL! I may apoligize the next day for letting my boobs fall outta my shirt or something, but never for drinking. LOL Thursday night is just our main night to go out, hang out, & get some yummy drinks!!! I usually go out on Saturdays too! Drink, dance, shoot pool, play a little cornhole! Have you ever played cornhole? P.S. No need to insert a perverted joke there, I know what you're already thinking!

I've played cornhole a few times; a game that should have been invented by a crohnie!
I can drink beer and do. I can't drink whiskey without my guts wrenching the next day so I stay away from that. I drink a little moonshine from time to time.

I LOVE cornhole! Always played better with a drink in hand.

Mmmmmmmmmm moonshine! Ever had "warm apple pie?" To die for!!!!

This is something that should be encouraged not discouraged.

No doubt. I'm always encouraging that when I'm drunk. Methinks if I had telekinesis I'd get in whole heaps of trouble. ;)

I'm not a big alcohol drinker anymore, but a few weeks ago I decided to have a sixer of Coronas and felt dandy. The next weekend I drank just one beer and my appendix area that constantly feels inflamed felt funny. It didn't hurt, but it felt a bit tingly and lightly burned. Like a wound was being cleansed? I wonder if I have active ulcers in that particular spot.

yeah i find that if i drink 1 or 2 drinks i can feel it.. I need to go all out and pound them back and im fine lol.. The next day is always a mystery for me. 50/50 chance ill have the D..

I don't think your wifey would like that too much...unless you were doing it to her LOL

Oh, she's pretty much got powers already. She's got transformation powers. Turning a limp noodle into a baseball bat with the power of her...had to make sure I was in the lounge there for a sec...naked breasts. :D

*Falls off my chair laughing*

You are too much!

P.S. Don't you have a book to write?

Heh! Ah, but it's the weekend! I get at least one day off a week. :D
Two if I behave and do my work. ;)

:D Can't. Watching movies and drinking booze waiting for 10pm to go see fireworks in Sunbury.

You are too much!

Edit: And with luck that was a "this dude is durn funny and he and his wife sound like fun" response and not a "umm...is this weirdo really only 20 minutes away from me?" response. ;)

those little labels on flagyl and methotrex that say dont drink? yeah, they aint lyin.
I can't tell you for sure about methotrex, but in the case of flagyl, the little label actually is lying. It was generally believed that metronidazole produced the same type of reaction as disulfiram when combined with ethanol (a reaction which, if large enough quantities of both are present, can be fatal), but about 10 years ago a couple of European labs started actually testing that premise rather than accepting it at face value. As it turns out, there isn't much of a reaction at all. I have verified those tests through my own independent research.

Metronidazole/flagyl makes me feel horribly ill and pukey that I dont and wouldn't want to drink whilst on it anyway!
Horrible stuff but very good at what it does!

methotrexate is really hard on your liver. very toxic. so throwing more toxins in the mix for it to have to process isnt exactly the wisest thing one could do.

Yeah, and that's a totally different story. I had tingly fingers occasionally for the first year or so I was on it, but no other adverse side effects.

Yeah, that's different too, and I can see how that could be a bad idea. Then again, pickles are delicious, and so are livers, so what's wrong with a pickled liver?

Minor FYI, Pinnacle Kiwi-Strawberry Vodka pretty much rocks! I now have a favorite fruit booze. Pinnacle Kiwi-Strawberry Vodka, Irish Mist, Lady Bligh Rum, and a splash of Sprite. :D:D:D

HAH lmao!
im confused as to how that relates...but its funny whichever way!

Just returned from a business trip, and boy was there some drinking going on.

As much as I disliked Gin in the past, it's grown on me as it's very low in sugars that can screw up IBS/crohns, so I experimented and have aquired a taste for a dirty martini and Pinapple Juice and Gin, and bloody mary with Gin.

Seems the multples of Martini and Pinapple juice/gin had no adverse affects at all. However as I learned in the past, don't have more than 1 bloody mary, even if they don't make it spicy.

I can drink a few drinks, but only hard liquors really work for me.

Most drinks have things I can't drink; carbonation is not good for digestion, I am terrible with yeast and gluten so that cuts out beer, wine has alot of fructose in it which I can't really handle and mixed drinks are full of so many additives and loads of sugar etc.

It's sort of funny, because drinking spirits on the rocks people think you're a heavy drinker yet I am definently on the bottom of the scale for an Australian my age :)

Also I only drink 1 or 2, maybe a maximum of 5 over a night on the rare occasion. Which is fine because I don't need many these days!

i had a mudslide 2 nights ago and some kind of parrot bay cooler thing that was fuschia and very tasty but dont remember the name tonight and im good!!

hooray for no more methotrex and flagyl=no death upon drinking!

I've been going on about Pinnacle Strawberry Kiwi vodka, but I believe now that the cherry is even better. We've been making cherry vanilla sodas with Pinnacle cherry and Lady Bligh rum.

What did you drink Ris? Maybe it's "what" you're drinking that's not working!

Ya know, I'm thinking you're right, Jilly!

I had a screwdriver. Maybe it's the vodka, maybe it's the oj. The acid in the oj probably isn't the best for my "stomach-of-steele"... ha.

I've tried creamier liquers, but my stomach doesn't do any better with those.

I don't drink beer. I can't handle soda, so anything like rum and Coke is out.

I do like daquiris, and haven't had those in years, so maybe I'll give those a try again.

Any suggestions?

I usually drink vodka mixed in something.......the trick I've found is if I take a pill for heartburn/acid reflux in the morning, I am good to go by that night. Try that & see what happens :)

Wooohhooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I went to TGI's last night after we saw Lewis Black in Boston and I had a strawberry daquiri and today I feel fine!!!!! :D

Yay Santos! Ease in slowly, now try 4.

I think I can drink when I am not flaring, and can't when I am flaring.
I don't drink too often though - so I am a cheap date. A couple of glasses of wine will have me drunk dialing, haha.
This summer I prolly drank more than I ever do, those Smirnoff Ice drinks are really yummy, especially the raspberry. Another fave of mine is Sprite with Peach Schnapps.

And OOOO! I made tiramisu martinis last summer and brought them to my end of school staff picnic! SOOOO yummy! Damn - I think I forgot the recipe. they were SO good, I yelled across the room to the cute young kid vice-principal, and slurred him name, LOL. Was flaring then, barfed in a bag in the car on the way home, took a picture of my REALLY ugly "I don't feeeeeel gooood" face, and did NOT feel good the next day either. My husband is a saint.
Lemme think of the recipe- I *think* this is right. You can't really go wrong - it's to taste.
Coffee liquor,
Amaretto,
Vanilla vodka,
Chocolate liquor
Milk or cream
Equal parts of each!
Add more milk if you want to dilute it, haha.

I'm a bit surprised to see some people having problems with beer, but not hard alcohol, I seem to have the opposite effects. In fact, I'm convinced something about a good beer on tap helps calm my stomach down a bit. Normally I don't eat more than a few bites of food before getting full, but when I go to a local pizza shop with my alcoholic friends the beer seems to do wonders for helping me eat far more than I normally would be able to. Maybe its just some sort of sub-conscious mind over matter thing so I can keep eating pizza, who knows?

I avoid hard alcohol though. Has anybody ever heard of those alcoholic energy drinks called Juice? I was drinking those for a short bit, 2 cans would get me plenty smashed and forgetting about how the night went, but they are horrible on my stomach. They taste pretty bad too, even worse coming back up, that smell....ughh lol

All right, Santos
Easy and slow
Used to get sick
Now she's ready to go

Only tried one
But now trying four
One gets her drunk
Four's got her floored.

There's a reason I'm called "One And Done" Santos.

I can do cheap beer (keystone light, natty light) whiskey, and vodka without any major problems unless I get really hammered. For some reason the really goood beer Stella, Beck's, etc., cause me much more problems.

I've never been a gin drinker, but the clear liquor I seem to have no problem with. I can't do anything mixed. I think it's the sugar in the drinks, I don't know. I just know if I drink it straight up it doesn't cause me as much problems.

Tiramisu martinis?!?!?! That sounds fantabulous!

Yep beer seems to work for me too. Even if I'm flaring pretty bad if I go to the bar and down a couple beers my gut will start feeling good.

However, staying home and sipping my favorite bourbon, while always enjoyable, doesn't really help my gut. I'm still trying to figure this all out. But maybe the combination of drinking, walking around, dancing, mixing it up, etc. - the added physical/social stuff that happens at the bar - makes the difference.

I can't seem to tolerate any alcohol but to be honest, I'm not that bothered about not drinking. It's the not being able to eat stuff that gets me down.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed is the bourbon of choice for the wife and I. It is extremely yummy - and expensive. But, since it takes us many months to finish a bottle, we agree its worth the splurge.

Cracker 07, you mentioned energy drinks. I don't do those but I will have a stiff double espresso a few times a week. I roast my own beans in a popcorn popper and I like them dark and greasy. My wife is always warning me about espresso upsetting my stomach but I keep a turd journal listing what goes in and how it comes out, and my caffeine intake doesn't seem to have any correlation with cramping or flares. In fact the opposite appears to be true.

I can't drink right now because i'm not well, but what you can try is.......
gluten free beer (redbridge i think it's called is one brand)
you can try hard cider. It's yummy & that's gluten free
dry wine
tequila - gluten free cause it's made from a cacti
vodka made from potatoes not a grain
nothing sweet like triple sec, amaretto (mixed drink liquor)
carbonation makes my stomach ill so i stay away from beer and stuff, but if it doesn't bother you, go for it.

Oh, almost forgot Sake cause it's made from rice.

hope i was helpful.

Would there be any side effects to drinking alcohol whilst on Prednisolone or 6-MP? I don't plan on drinking, I just want to know for future reference. :)

I've been on Imuran for about 18 months now, at various doses, and drinking never affected me. And when I drink, I drink ALOT! lol, but only on the weekends. :p
