Why am I gaining weight? Azathioprine?

Hello.

Three years ago in May 2011, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. I lost a great deal of weight, despite being on Prednisone. Gradually, I gained some of that weight back, and got off of Prednisone after about six months. So, from May-November 2011, I was on Prednisone, was underweight, and eventually reached a moderately safe weight.
From November 2011 to January 2012, I was fine.
Then in February 2012, I developed a mild form of Anorexia Nervosa. I got over that in September 2012, I believe.
That next late December 2012 to early January 1013, I gained about 25 pounds. I was able to drop one or two here and there over the year, but I always gained it back again.
Then in September 2013, I had another flare-up. I went on a couple of drastic diets for my health, and began losing weight very, very slowly, some of which I gradually gained back. Then, in February 2014, I started gaining weight again. It's like my body is resisting everything that could make it lose weight.

I know that this weight gain isn't because I'm feeling better, because I gained a little weight after I got better the first time, and didn't gain again until a year or two later. Then I gained weight when I was ill the second time. That can't be it. I've been on Imuran since I was diagnosed, and I'm wondering if that can have anything to do with it. I know Imuran's common side effects don't include weight gain, but I can't lose weight no matter what I do.

I'm on a very special diet called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I'm doing fairly well. Most of my meals are made up of vegetables. I don't eat processed sugars or wheat at all. I'm doing a special exercise program three times a week called T-Tapp, and I walk fairly often.

What could be the problem? Is my Crohn's Disease impeding my progress? Is it azathioprine?

Thank you so much for your help!

kel: Yes, I'm only taking Imuran.
I'm 5' 5.5"
My weight is something around...150-155 lbs? I'm not sure exactly.

Based on your history, and a brief glance at what T tapp is I'm going to guess you're not getting nearly enough calories. Imuran alone should not be causing a change in weight.

Do you eat meat? You said you are eating mostly vegetables and following scd.

I do eat meat, but I'm trying to lose weight, not gain it. I'm hungry for every meal, and my appetite is healthy. I doubt I wouldn't be eating enough. I should be losing weight, but I'm not.

Eat as you normally would tomorrow, measure each portion, and post the calories here.

Weight always comes down to calories consumed and calories burned.

Anyone will lose weight if their calorie intake is lower than their calorie expenditure. The types of foods you eat don't make a difference - obviously a healthy diet (whatever that means to each individual) is very important for all sorts of other reasons, but whether you're eating veg or meat or processed food or whatever, the factor affecting your weight will be the calories.

Crohn's can make it harder to gain weight as it can cause problems with appetite and digestion, but I can't think it would contribute to weight gain.

Some meds can increase appetite, but the weight gain itself comes from the extra food eaten; if you don't react to the increased appetite you won't gain weight. (A slight exception is weight gain from water retention caused by certain meds, but this is usually only a small amount.)

I'm in the opposite situation. I can't gain weight - but it comes down to the same thing - calories; I just feel too ill to eat enough.

Why the heck would you care about gaining weight? I'd kill for that right now. Last years flare up I went down to 106 from 145. And this years flare up I'm 117. After being in the 130's. I'm 5'10" 5'11".

Of course someone cares if they are overweight, not everyone with Crohn's loses weight, and having Crohn's does not prevent a person from having the health problems associated with being overweight.

I'm underweight myself but I think it's important to recognise that Crohn's affects people differently.

Strangak - are you actually overweight at present? I realise you said you'd had anorexia in the past, so I hope you're only planning on losing weight if it's not so much as to make you underweight.

You might like to look at this thread: http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=32326 There are many like you with Crohn's but not underweight.
