I will have an appointment with my G.I on wednesday and I will start eating solids again. Any ideas or advice ?

Hi Cbonhomme

Bet you're looking forward to eating!!! :) My son was on an enteral diet for six weeks (although he was fed through an NG tube...) but when reintroducing foods, this was the schedule given to us by his doctor and dietitien:

First 4-5 days: 'white' foods - potatos, rice, pasta, white bread (any type), plain crackers, rice krispies (no milk), plain muffins. He was allowed a small amount of toppings (i.e. little bit of butter, low fat cream cheese, strained salsa/tomato sauce, nutella) - i.e., just enough to moisten the food.

Next 4-5 days: low fat meats and alternatives - any type although I gave him mainly chicken, fish, eggs to begin

Next 4-5 days: soft fruits and veggies, no seeds!, no skins, no membranes ('skin' around orange segments)

Next 4-5 days: low fat dairy

And then all else as tolerated.

I was fairly firm in keeping to this schedule although I did let him 'cheat' a few times! After six weeks he wanted EVERYTHING!! LOL

good luck!

thanks! Now I know what to expect :) I just cant wait to eat something! haha :p the only bad part is that my best friend's birthday party is tomorrow (She planned so i can eat <3) and they are having pizza...... :S o well, at least I'm not AS left out as before :p

good news: I can eat almost whatever I want!! The only thing is I have to eat little portions more often :) PIZZA HERE I COME!!! :D

Great xmas present!!! I would suggest digestive enzymes too, I use them with protein and carbs and meat. Since you are in Canada Life brand (green bottle) is the best value and breaks it down and absorbs the nutrients. Probiotics help to put in good bacteria.

good advice :) I started eating food today for the first time in 2 months and I'm having some stomach cramps right now :S is it normal? since i havent eaten food for so long im GUESSING that its normal but im not sure :s

Hi,
Yes, last time I was on EN I was told that some stomach cramping is usual when reintroducing food. Keep a food diary, if they are persistant to see if any foods are causing it. I had to reintroduce food gradually though...white rice, potatoes then white fish or meat, well cooked root veg etc. I had a booklet with the different stages in. I'm back on it again now via a nj tube but looks like mid to end jan before food, so you can have my share. Hope yopu enjoy eating some christmassy foods :))

I'm sure you're anxious to enjoy all foods! :) But, please be careful reintroducing foods... you've made such huge sacrifices over the last 2 months, keep yourself 'on track' for just a bit longer... I'm certainly not a doctor nor have any medical background so I don't want to contradict your doctor BUT I don't think it's a good idea to go ahead and eat anything (although we were also told small portions are best). Let your stomach ease back into it's 'job'. Try to stick with softer, lower fibre foods at the beginning... :)
