I hate it if you go the the ER for something UN-related to Crohn's. When the Doctor hears your medical history they automatically determine it's Crohn's related.

I'm sorry but I don't know how a nail that's pierced my foot has anything to do with my digestive problem!?!?!?

Thankfully, I haven't had to go to the hospital for anything non-Crohn's related.....but I can definetely empathise with bird brained doctors!

Thanks, as for the doctors, they aren't paid to think... I don't think, for the most part. Well I'm not out to bash all doctors. Some use their brains and can figure out that my hand was broken because I'm an idiot and punched something that was made five inch sold steel and not because of my Crohn's... I know it's was difficult and I was kind of surprized I didn't get a x-ray of my belly region for my broken hand. Don't laugh, I've had x-ray's of my stomach when I injured my foot during baseball... go figure.

I know how frustrating it can be with doctors. I do not have any personal experience in the ER like you with something non-Crohn's related, but sometimes I feel like the doctor's not listening and is just going by what is normal procedure. Sometimes I am explaining a symptom I am feeling or something and I can see the doctor nodding going and making "mm hmm" sounds of agreement, but I know he is just waiting for me to stop talking so he can start telling me what he recommends. I then start to wonder why I am even telling the doctor this if it is not going to factor into his decision for me at all? I just keep telling myself that this is someone who has a lot of experience with this stuff and they know it better than me or anyone else I know so I should listen to them. I really respect my doctor and trust him too, so that definately helps.

Their is a simple test you can if the doctor is listening. Start throwing absurd things like "the sharp pain seems to come and go while I eat during my most recent alien abduction the aliens recommend that eat upside down and I should be in any pain. What do you think doc?"

I've caught an ER doc not paying attention that way... I didn't use that story but something similar.

Once I went to the ER for a problem that I knew WAS Crohn's related and the doc on duty looked at me and said "And how do you KNOW you have Crohn's?" I wanted to slap him. Then he accused me of "meds seeking". Like I don't have anyplace I'd rather be than in the ER.

Some docs are just idiots.

AMEN to the above quote from the original post! I couldn't have said it better myself! WHY do they do that?! I hate labels. I've been avoiding my GI doctor for the past (almost) year, because whenever I go in with ANY complaint that is unrelated to CD, he wants to put me on something...anything!

The last time I went to see him he was trying to convince me that I needed to go back on Prednisone (even though I've been 100% free from any and all Crohns symptoms for almost 5+ years now!). The reason I think he wants to put me on something is b/c he had me taking Azathioprine (Imuran) for years as a "maintenance drug" and last year my bilirubin levels were elvated on a couple different blood tests. Therefore, he determined I was having a bad reaction to the drug and took me completely off of it. Now I guess he thinks I NEED to be on SOME type of medication (even though I've done better over the past year than ever!) Ha! It drives me nuts sometimes.

Anyone who has found a really great GI doctor (namely one who will listen and work with their patient to do whatever seems best for that individual's unique case and trusts that his/her patient actually knows something about their own body and how they feel ), has found a rare and true treasure!

I guess it's difficult for doctors to admit when they just "don't know" something?! I guess a lot of them think that if you have come in to see them, it must mean you want them do something (even if it's the "wrong thing") or PUT YOU ON something (anything) <sigh>

HAHA thats the funniest thing i have ever heard.... But when i have illneses my dr tries to have it connected with my cd and meds cuase she tells me that its better to have one problem then many lmao. But luckily when i sprained my foot they didnt tell me it was cd realted haha drs r funny.

One time I dislocated my arm when I landed straight on it and I popped it out and then had to put it back in, gross. And the doctor I went to who specializes in that kind of stuff said I was in pain because of my CD. I do not know how many of you need surgery on your shoulder because of your Crohn's.

Yeah I can't say I get pain/surgery in my shoulder because my crohns was effecting my intestines which happen to be located in a different region of my body. But the Doctor was a specialist. How could he have been possibly been wrong!?!?!??!?! That is just insane.

Yah i too have gone to the er tons of times.Last time i was there on fathers day.the intern at the time gave me a shot of dilaudid and sent me home. he said I had a migrane headache.lol sue enough Iwas back in2 days later. After all that pain and suffuring turns out I had a picc-line infection. ended up staying in hospital for 3 weeks. I think that was number 5 (picc-lines) that is.so if this(or when) this one gets infected Ihave to get one in the side of my neck.No more viens left in my arms.Guess i will kinda look like Dracula lol. I took my husband to ER for pnuemonia, and he mentioned I have Crohn's. The doctor raised his eyebrow and asked if his pneumonia could be related to Crohn's? Not good! We distracted him by showing him that this cabinet that stores paperwork forms has these two men painted on it and the forms are located next to the correct part of the body they relate to. Then I told the guy what meds I wanted for my husband and we beat a hasty retreat before they tried to resection him or me!

use their washroom!!!

I have been stuck so many times in a store,

they still won't let me use the R room!

Across here in Scotland and that other country we are attached with, you can get a "can't wait" card which explains that we have an illness thats not contagious and we require the use of facilities urgently. I don't use one personally but I know people that do and swear by it.
