Hi

After checking a thread here about food intolerances and discussing the book "Eating Right For Your Blood Type", I was wondering if we with Cohn's have a dominant blood type. Mine is O, and in the book it is mentioned that people with type O blood are more prone to Crohn's. So let us see if there is any connection.... Maybe we'll have more insight if this approach can help us.

Here is alink with more info on this diet

Great thread Mazen. Really glad you did the follow-up to the prior thread. I'm type O+ (but I'm not positive ... Nah, this post is too important for silly word gags). It'll be interesting to see if we can get a lot of members to take the poll (c'mon members, it could be important) AND what the results turn out to be. I wonder if the so called 'medical' community has ever truly explored this seemingly elemental possibility? :)

I read that type O is also more likely to react badly to H pylori bacteria. There was a long complex reason, but I do not remember what it was.

Hence, my suspicion of H pylori as a Crohn's trigger.

Yeah Kev, mine is O+ too. Wow, it's one day and till now 5 out of 6 respondents are O. C'mon guys, we need as much participants to see if we can establish a connection.....

Dan: I read about a study in Greece, that showed that Crohn's patients treated for H pylori were also free of symptoms after the treatment. So a connection is possible...

I dunno what I am... and i WANT to know... but I asked if they could tell me and they said that its a special test... and the best way to get typed was to donate blood... well I CAN'T DONATE BLOOD... they are idiots... I have a doctors appointment on Friday though... and I'm demanding to be typed... that's just that... they can't refuse me can they? GRR :)

I think they usually get your blood type at birth. There must be a record of it someplace.

Hi Katie. I found mine when I did my military service, and we had to do the test for it. But it's an easy test, and should be done by any doctor or lab. Anyway, everybody should know there blood type in case of emergency.

I'm A+ !!!!

YAY I know!!!!!! FINALLY!!!

Well I just know that my mom didn't even ever know... so I'm not sure they ever told her.

Welll, with only a small cross section sample (c'mon forum members, join in here) it seems there is no big eureka.. tho it is toooo early to say with any degree of certainty. Has anyone stumbled upon a write up of testing along these lines yet?

I just recently had to get blood while I was in the hospital for my surgery and found out that I was A+.
I plan to get that as a tattoo on me as well, and I also plan to get a semi-colon on my belly since I have had part of my colon removed a few years back.
sorry, I always seem to trail off of the subject.

I give blood whenever I can, so I know I'm O+. O's are suppose to be more rare too so it's interesting that so far the majority of people (so far) on this forum have type O blood.

O+ With crohns its important to know before my first surgery I would bleed alot I;ve had over 20 blood infusions

he should be able to tell you from your blood results. If you have AB negative...... well if you need a blood transfusion your as good as dead.

I have no idea, would you just ask for that info from the doctor?

Mark because you had surgery, you were probably typed at that time in case you needed a transfusion, so your doctor should have record of that or at the very least be able to call to get a copy of the results.

I was under the impression that people with AB- blood can receive blood from people who are AB-, A-, or B- and it is being questioned whether they can receive O- blood or not.

now i'm really curious i am going to ahve to check.... I have my medical records in my truck i wonder if it will be in there somewhere.

I am pretty sure I am O+ as well. I thought O was the most common? According to the blood type diest from memory Us Os are meat eaters and should be avoiding grains and such which does make sense with the Crohns connection as many would say cutting out carbs is beneficial. Gosh I hope Ris isnlt an O and should be eating meat!!!

HUH! Im A+ and its saying I would benifit from a more vegi diet. Makes sense I have never been a big stake and potato eater. And since CD stake kinda hurts. I thought it was just casue red meats are harder to digest. I know I couldnt give up chicken and fish though.

But it is particularly important for sensitive Type As to eat their foods in as natural a state as possible: pure, fresh and organic. "I can't emphasize enough how this critical dietary adjustment can be to the sensitive immune system of Type A. With this diet you can supercharge your immune system and potentially short circuit the development of life threatening diseases."

Sensitive immune system eh..... apparently so!!

Very interesting thanks for posting.

Seems to be a lot of O+'s is here.

lol... call me a dork, but I wasn't surprised at all. The results of this poll follow exactly what stats show as the prevalence of blood types.

O is the most common, but it's also the most demanded because Os can give to any of the others. And O- is even more awesome because they can give to ANYONE.
A is the next most common type.
B follows.
AB is the least common, which is pretty good since they can't give to anyone other than AB.

I enjoyed some of my Bio/Human Phys classes way too much.

Wouldn't have a clue
I asked my old dr like a million times he kept sayin no need to know these days as they check of you need blood and the test is very quick - what a wanker
so I gave up asking

I'm AB- - why does my life suck if I have AB-? I have never thought much about blood

0+ was told just before surgery...good blood type to have

I bumped thread b/c the diet is being talked about right now on Dr. Oz. They don't advise it as it is really restrictive... they advise a more balanced one...but thats just Dr. Oz

What is the connection, does anyone know? There are more O people anyway, so it makes sense that more O people have Crohn's.

Someone asked about AB- and it is hard for you because you have the rarest type of blood. And negatives can give to both positive and negative blood types, but can only receive from negative blood, which is rarer. Here is a cool chart I found. Sorry mods if it isn't acceptable to post the chart. I could do a link instead if you can't accept this:

If your blood type is . . .

Type You Can Give Blood To You Can Receive Blood From
A+ A+ AB+ A+ A- O+ O-
O+ O+ A+ B+ AB+ O+ O-
B+ B+ AB+ B+ B- O+ O-
AB+ AB+ Everyone
A- A+ A- AB+ AB- A- O-
O- Everyone O-
B- B+ B- AB+ AB- B- O-
AB- AB+ AB- AB- A- B- O-

Out of 100 donors . . . . .

84 donors are RH+ 16 donors are RH-
38 are O+ 7 are O-
34 are A+ 6 are A-
9 are B+ 2 are B-
3 are AB+ 1 is AB-

Here is the link

There are various sets of numbers quoted for the blood types world-wide, but they all go something like:

O - 43.9%
A - 34.8%
B - 16.5%
AB - 5.1%

However the percentages vary widely from country to country. In Australia, for example, O = 48%, A = 39%, B = 10%, AB = 3%. In South Korea, on the other hand, O = 28%, A = 34%, B = 27%, AB = 11%.

A+ and I have antibodies. I found out about the antibodies only this month when I had surgery. I never had a blood transfusion, the doc said some people are born with antibodies.
