Does anyone else here take zinc supplements? I am taking a 30mg zinc pill everyday because I had read on the Internet that the help immunity and raise the whtie blood count, which is what I need.
It is really important that you get tested for zinc levels before you start to supplement because zinc is one element that is toxic at high levels in your body. As I have said in another thread, many people get enough zinc (and copper) in their water supply. It leaches out of metal pipes and also from the ground in areas where there are zinc and copper deposits.
I've heard of zinc possibly being helpful with boosting immunity. Sadly, the few times I've taken zinc tablets, they gave me a belly ache pretty bad.
If zinc tablets cause you some gut problems, something that you might find helpful instead is taking some time release melatonin. It is typically taken to help with a good nights sleep. Melatonin does that well I can attest. Melatonin is also thought to help with the absorption of zinc, along with boosting immunity.
Something else I've read that might be helpful in zinc and other mineral absorption is avoiding wheat. Some substances in the grain are thought to interfere with mineral absorption.
...–Impaired nutrient absorption–Grain consumers due to exposure to phytates, lectins, and wheat gliadin, have reduced absorption of magnesium, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and other nutrients which can add up to increased cardiovascular risk....
As far as I know zinc is not one of those supplements you can pretty much blindly take like Vitamin C or D. You should get your levels tested to make sure you are actually deficient.
