Hi Becca. I was told "just IBS" when I was 25 after a gastroscopy and sigmoidoscopy (but not a colonoscopy) found nothing. When I was 42 and having got a lot worse and losing a lot of weight over a year they looked properly and I was diagnosed with Crohns. I think it's quite a common story...

    Strictures and osmotics

Yes. I've had more loose stools and D since surgery than I did in the much more painful decades before (where it was very rare and I was mostly constipated), but if that's the valve; if that's to do with bile salt malabsorption, or whether it's just the disease being slightly different now I've...

    New medication- Azathioprine

1 year here. No issues apart from some nausea the first couple of days. However I had to reduce the dose after 6 months because my liver results were out of range, which was also the point where it seemed to start working. Having inflammation also increases your risk of cancer, and every drug...

    Strictures and osmotics

I don't know about movicol, but when I had a stricture everything I tried made the pain worse and I eventually settled on taking nothing. Avoiding all fibre did help. But if they're telling you to take it you probably shouldn't stop.

    Aza & Allergies

Doesn't seem to have helped my hay fever. I asked my doctor this specifically when I started Aza, and he said unfortunately it's a different part of the immune system.

IBD nurses have phoned me twice asking me to do a blood test

I was only ever told 1 week, then another after 2 weeks, then 3 months thereafter. Usually I have to remind the nurse what it's for. Seems a bit strange you're getting the tests so often. I'm on 100mg (and I'm 13st too). Down from 150mg because my liver results were going out of range.

    CT Scans and Misc. Questions

Well the majority of us have Crohns in the TI, so it does attack the same place. Even if you weren't aware of any symptoms you might have had inflammation there for years. I had that a couple of times, in fact I think the reason I was misdiagnosed (with IBS grrr) the first time was because...

    CT Scans and Misc. Questions

If you have long term inflammation it can build up scar tissue and cause a stricture. This is what happened to me, though it took 20 years for it to get really bad. It's also highly likely that disease in the Terminal Ileum will cause a B12 deficiency (which is where it's absorbed), and if that...

    Surgery Advice

Sounds much the same as me. I guess it depends on how much they want to remove, but for me it was 20cm (out of 7 meters of small bowel). It was done laparoscopically, which meant I ended up with about a one inch scar down from my belly button, and three tiny incisions surrounding it which I...

Crohn's disease drug in phase 3 clinical trial - 80% of enrolled patients are in complete remission

http://www.redhillbio.com/crohns-disease Interesting but it is based on MAP being the cause.

Crohn's Disease - Immune system higher or lower?

When I started Aza I asked the doctor if suppressing my immune system would cure my hayfever. He laughed and said unfortunately not as it's "a different part of the immune system". I don't know if that's in any way related.

    Beau's lines!

I used to get this a lot when I was younger. I remember someone telling me it was lack of calcium, but I've no idea if that is true. Hasn't happened in a long time, so maybe I've just been eating healthier. Or could be because of taking multivitamins; no idea.

    Wall of silence

Mine was always prescribed by the GP. The GI told me to go and see them so they could manage it, and I completely confused the hell out of the receptionist trying to explain the situation. She could only say "do you want to see a doctor", which I didn't. In the end they got a doctor to phone me...

How do you deal with embarrassing bathroom noises?

I remember well being in a small meeting room with my stomach (Ileum really) making noises like a victorian draining system. I had to excuse it in a couple of job interviews too. Best to apologise, be honest and make a joke of it I think.

Looking for a good Colorectal Surgeon in the UK or Germany

This bloke was my surgeon. I never met any other so can't really compare but I was very impressed. http://www.oxfordcolorectal.co.uk/richard_guy.html

    Mouth/teeth pain.

Not so much my teeth, but my lips and gums do randomly hurt in the way you describe from time to time. I find I often get painful spots at the same time. Crohns can attack the mouth. Pretty normal symptoms I think.

    Excrutiating Pain Neck/Shoulders

I've often had shoulder and neck pain recently. I bought an orthopedic pillow and that helped quite a bit as did stretching. I wouldn't have described it as excruciating though. If it's that bad then you should see someone.

    Pain relief for dental pain?

FWIW I would have taken the Nurofen. Yes we're not supposed to take NSAIDs, but that's more of a long term damage thing and if it's a one off it's hard to see it doing you any harm. But that may be terrible advice.

    Had surgery 2 weeks ago

Everything was weird for me for at least 3 weeks, then it settled down. It stands to reason that that part would be painful, with everything it's been through, and it's now in use again.
