I had some dental treatment recently and my mouth is taking ages to settle down and the pain has been quite severe at times. I know I'm not supposed to take Nurofen etc with Crohns, and that is the most effective painkiller for dental pain unfortunately. Paracetamol doesn't work at all. What do other Crohnies take for dental pain? My dentist hasn't been able to suggest anything but that may just be because he doesn't understand Crohns.

I was told paracetamol and codeine, or just codeine alone providing you don't suffer from constipation.

I had an abscess on my wisdom tooth a few years ago, and it was unbearable. I hope you get some relief soon!!

Thanks for the replies. My GI told me not to use codeine, so maybe I'll look into Anbesol. Fingers crossed things are improving, the pain has reduced to a level now where I don't need pain relief, but I've had a miserable week with mouth pain and it would be useful to have an idea what to take next time (there's bound to be a next time, unfortunately).

I had a horrendous time with tooth ache when i needed a root canal a year or so ago. I had neuralgia and was climbing the wall in pain for weeks. As i was living on tramadol at the time my dentist said he cant even give patients anything as strong as that so i had to live with it.

Mouth pain can be pretty horrendous. Last spring I developed a huge mouth ulcer (and six weeks later a partial blockage for which I had to be hospitalized). I couldn't eat anything and it was really hard to sleep. My GP gave me a thick lidocaine liquid that I sort of swished around my mouth; it was really viscous so it was pretty difficult to swish it but I did my best. It helped for a little while. Hope your mouth continues to get better.

If codeine is contraindicated, tramadol/tramacet might be another option. But if your dentist doesn't know what to suggest (or maybe afraid to make a recommendation because of the Crohn's), he should consult with another physician on the subject, not just leave you hanging.

FWIW I would have taken the Nurofen. Yes we're not supposed to take NSAIDs, but that's more of a long term damage thing and if it's a one off it's hard to see it doing you any harm. But that may be terrible advice.
