Has any other moms had difficulty getting kids on a 504 plan? My son's school agreed to identify my son as being 504 eligible but wouldn't put him on a 504 plan even though I stated in writing exactly what should go in the plan based on a 504 plan I saw on the internet for IBD patients. For some reason, the school is really resistant and I had to go directly to the school board just to get a meeting setup because the first time I requested a meeting, the counselor denied my request. Being 504 eligible is NOT the same thing as having a 504 plan. In FL, kids are not eligible for a McKay scholarship unless they are on the plan.

We had no problems getting my son on the 504 plan using a letter from the GI detailing his illness and limitations.

I hope you are able to straighten this out, the 504 plan was very valuable to my son during flares, hospital stays and surgery.

Our FL district (Polk) has a form that must be filled out by the physician treating the condition. It is called the "Physician's Medical Diagnosis" form. My daughter's school was more than willing to give accommodations once this form was submitted.

Compliance to section 504 is a federal statue, not an option. Ask the school for the reason of denial in writing. Go to the school District, if they denied ask for the letter of denial. Request a due process hearing or file a complaint with the office of civil rights. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses!
Jacqui: The school has the diagnosis information and a letter stating his need for accommodations.
Clash: I'm glad your experience went well.
DanceMom: We are in Brevard county and they don't use a form.
araceli: This is exactly where I'm at right now. Fighting the system. They didn't deny he was 504 eligible - they just don't want to put him on a 504 plan. He failed due to absences last semester and I was so disgusted with the school that I pulled him out and put him somewhere else so I'm continuing the process with the new school.

Wow, that's awful that they deem him 504 eligible but they are denying him a plan! Have you gotten their response in writing? I would goto the meeting with an updated letter from the GI, if you can have the GI go by the CCFA accommodations and how each applies to your son. Also, there is a video about Crohn's, your child and educators that you may want to take. I don't remember the link but I think jmrogers or my little penguin posted it. Hopefully, one of them will know what I'm talking about.

I can't imagine the frustration of knowing your child qualifies and still having to fight! Hugs!

That was me, it's from Seattle Children's and explains why kids with Crohn's need a 504 and it is geared towards teachers/educators. Give me a minute and I'll find the link.

Things to Remember even without a 504 as long as the abscence is medically excused ( doctors note vs parent note ) they can't count it against him.
You need a letter from your Gi outlining what your child needs at school.
Document everything in writing (email )
Get ahold of district 504 coordinator in writing
Any phone calls from the school write a letter of understanding back
See wrights law

If your child was eligible by school get that letter
Contact your local ocr ( office of civil rights )
They can help .

Good luck

I am so grateful for the information from all of you on this thread. I just received an email from my son's new school to setup a subsequent 504 meeting. I sent her the link to the video, link to current 504 law and the customized 504 accommodation plan. I'm hoping for a better outcome this time around.

You have all be so very helpful!
