Hi,

my doctor wants me to start imuran, i used to take 6mp for 8 years but stopped after wanting to explore an alternative way, flared a few times, started it again for a few days and felt extremely toxic and nauseous. so he said maybe try imuran, with weekly blood work.

the question is which is better/less toxic, since ive done 6mp and still have a bunch of it should i take that or should start azathioprine.

ultimately i dont want to be on it for long, i want to try LDM, and continue working with my Naturopath.

currents rx: Prednisone 10mg been at 10 for a month and hasn't done anything.
asacol 12 400mg.

I have been on Imuran for 1 year now and I feel better now than I ever have. I caution you that you NEED to do the blood tests and make sure that your GI doctor and Primary Care doctor are in sync. I have had no side effects from the Imuran but again, they need to watch it very closely.

I don't know that there is a "less/more toxic" but the studies I have read do say that some people tolerate one or the other better and to try the other if people have a bad reaction to one. I have a theory why that is, but it's just a theory so not much use. If your doctor wants to try Azathioprine and you did well with a thiopurine in the past, I think it's worth giving a shot.

Have you asked your doctor if he'll prescribe LDN instead?

Hi David

I called my naturopath and he said to try it for a few days and see how I feel and react and that the bloodwork every week is good way to tell. My naturopath said they're all drugs regardless but getting inflammation under control is important. and I see my gi soon and I'll bring it up with him.

I'm surprised your naturopath was for you going on it. Kudos to them understanding the importance of getting the inflammation under control. I think you found a good one :)

Just throwing it out there (not that anyone wants to take more of it or be on it at all) but why are you only on 10mg of Prednisone? Did you start at a higher dose and taper down or were you put on such a low dose in hopes it would actually do something? I mean, its seriously a really low dose and Prednisone usually dose a great job at reducing inflammation but generally at higher doses.

If 6MP isn't working then trying something else may do some good so I hope it works for you. :)

There are the same repercussions with each of the drugs. I've tried both and neither of them work for me. Hopefully you have better luck then I do.

ive been tapering off of it from 40 in may, ive been on 10mg for over a month since my doctor wants me to be on it until i start imuran than taper off, its not really doing anything at 10mg for me.
