Hi all,

I have a small problem here. I'm quite shy to ask n tell, but I don't hv any other choice as I need help. About 4 days ago, I found a lump or something like swollen near my anus. And it is very pain when i touch it or when I sit. Can I know what is this? Have anyone got one like this? What shall I do? I have a doc's appointment tomorrow. I'm just so tensed bout this and don't know what to do. Thought it will go off in few days but it did not. Currently i'm on these medication. Imuran (50 mg- just started 2 weeks ago), Pred ( 20mg per day), iron tablets, Pentasa ( 3g per day). Do you think any of this medicine could have caused it? Hope you guys can help me as soon as possible.

It could be hemmeroids or an abcsess. An abcsess is like a sac of puss under your skin that if it is not leaking already, kinda brown but lighter than poop, then they will have to pop it. Then they will put you on antibiotics, I'm on flagyl and cipro and I end today, and tell you to soak two to three times a day for ten to twenty minutes. I normally soak for anout forty minutes but I dont do anything so I don't have much of a reason to get out of the tub. I like to soak in aveeno as it soothes the area very well and makes things less itchy. I don't think your meds caused this. I hope things go well tomorrow.

Yeah, Lily, understand your embarrassment.. It could be number of things, only a doctors examination can determine exactly what it is. As for the meds.. Well, the 'lump' could be a hemmerhoid... and some folks seem to develop these on the odd occasion if they've taken in too much iron. I dunno if that is totally accurate, a wives tale, or if a rare side effect. Again ,be sure to have your doctor check it out

Hey Lily! I had 2 Perirectal Abscesses (which i later found out were fistulas leading to my bartholins gland). which I had thought they were just hemorhoids and nothing serious. but after about a week my bump was huge and i was in serious pain which sounds like what you have! but I hope everything goes well at the Dr.s! Good Luck!

I've had both hemorhoids and an abscess/fistula and both were unpleasant and embarrasing to say the least. I would call your G.I. and get an appointment asap so you don't end up like me in the ER one night getting surgery the next because you have an untreated abscess. Granted in my case I told my doctors what it was after reading about the symptoms and realizing they matched mine perfectly and they didn't listen, but trust me...trying to tough out the pain just makes it that much worse. If I had the surgery sooner, I might not have a non-healing wound (a.k.a. big incision still open) 2.5 years post surgery. If it is hemorhoids instead, they sound rather big and painful and a prescription suppository or cream might help more than the standard otc prepH. Either way, get into the doctors fast and tell them you are in a lot of pain + there is a massive lump and they will get you in sooner rather than later if they are an office worth staying with.

I had the same feeling near my anus, and it turned out to be a fistula. I belive it was an like abcess at first, because it wasn't draining. Then the colorectal surgeon poked a hole in it, and drained it. Then I took anitibiotics, and it was fine for a quite a while. It very slowly drained on its own, so much so that I didn't even notice it. Since then, it got worse, and couldn't keep up with itself draining, so I had to have it removed surgically.
The only advice that I have for the pain is a cream called Calmoseptine. It is cooling and soothing, and helps the pain somewhat when you just think you're about to scream.
Good luck - I hope it's just a hemmi that goes away.

good luck with the appointment lily - you're doing the right thing by seeing a doctor straight away. like everyone has said, it may just be a hemorrhoid, but it needs diagnosing properly.

Are hemmorhoids really that similar to abcsesses that one could be confused? I had hemmorhoids a year ago exiting my first flare and occassionally get them (seemingly it is them) on this flare, and each time they've gone down with Prep H and problem solved. I assume if I put prep H on and it shrinks/disappears then abcsess is ruled out of the equation?

Some roids won't respond to prep H, or anything else.. and they can occasionally even get 'strangulated'.. requiring surgery. Some folks think of roids as just one of those... pains in the backsides.. that are no big deal. But, that's not always the case. Like, if someone has a 'lump', it's a good idea to get a professional opinion.

About 5 years ago I had a lump in my anus that felt quite hard to touch, it got quite big but being a man I done the usual thing and ignored it hoping it would go away, one day I was at work when someone said "have you sat on something?" I ran to the loo and to my horror this lump had burst, it was just clear liquid a little thicker than water that had soaked through my trousers, when I returned I made up a story about sitting on a coffee soaked chair!

For a few weeks after that every time I went to the toilet a little more liquid would come out until eventually it stopped and went away.

I know of no other forum where I could tell that story and not think anything of it!
