My son might possibly be accepted for a clinical trial close to our home he was recommended by his GI. If he makes it through he will receive Humira for free. Finally we have a small ray of hope.

Wonderful
Keep in mind humira has a prescription assistance program which covers up to $500 of your copay a month after your regular insurance lowering the copay to $5
And most normal prescription plans have an out of pocket max which the copay assistance card amount counts toward .

At the beginning of each year copay assistance pays $2500 for the first month .
This is not based on finances .

If it takes I will apply since he's under my insurance. He was a bit blue after his last flare up but this new GI seems to be moving faster and willing to be more aggressive trying treatments. He wants to avoid surgery at all costs if possible.

Good luck! I hope he is accepted into the trial. :)

Any idea when you will know?

He's supposed to go back for his first screening on December 17th. They want him to taper off the prednisone to ready his system for the Humira. This has caused him excess nausea and pain and weakness poor thing. He's still on 6-MP plus Pentasa plus painkillers.

Not understanding the taper
Ds was on pred while on remicade
Once he got the third infusion then we started the taper not before
Humira takes 3-6 months to start working
So that is a long time in pain

What type of clinical trial? Humira is already used for Crohns', is there something new they are tryng it out on?

As for the weaning off pred - do they want him off all other meds first or will they keep him on something so he doesn't flare too badly?

Our ray of hope was snuffed out anyway for now. He had a bad flare up and during his treatment the hospital gave him steroids and fentanyl. He seems to be having another one right now and the director seemed insistent he not use any fentanyl and just ride his flare up out. I am concerned he's having very severe pain at present, the nausea has returned and he's lost his appetite. He did partially well Christmas day and I am worried about him again. I don't like seeing him in pain.

Hugs
Sorry about the pred
But Humira takes 3-4 months to become effective so it makes sense that he would flare when the pred was dropped before the Humira had time to build up.

Can you get a second opinion at an Ibd clinic (maybe in philidelphia)?

They're talking about him having surgery to remove the stricture they think is there. He seemed okay with not being in the trial anyway since they seemed to want his pain and discomfort to coincide with their trial procedures and when he was in pain they never got back to him in a timely manner. He said he had a bad taste in his mouth reminding him of number two as he put it.

Is he seeing a pain management doctor? A pain management dr made a big difference for my daughter. Her GI/rheumatologist were more focused on treating the disease and not pain relief when she really needed both.

We're trying to get him to a pain management specialist now. Finding one who takes our insurance has been maddening in itself. Today he had an xray and the surgeon is looking it over to see if surgery is a viable option.
