Abscess coming back or just scar tissue?

Hi all,

I'm just wondering what the typical healing process is for a lanced perirectal abscess? I had it lanced 2 weeks ago and I'm developing a hard bubble as it's closing. I just want to make sure it's scar tissue and not another abscess... I don't feel inflammation anywhere else and the hard mass is what is concerning me. Please let me know any input you have. I'm in panic-mode...

Thanks,

Hi Vanessa,

Try and come out of panic mode, cool and calm is the way. If this is worrying you, then try and talk to your Surgeon/Doctor and see if they or one of their team will take a look for you. Hopefully, they can put your mind at rest. If something does need to be done, then they are the people to sort it out for you.

It could be scar tissue, but sometimes an abscess can reform after it has been drained and you may need antibiotics, further surgery or both. Is it still draining? If so, that's good. If it's not not draining, increasingly painful and you feel ill with chills, fever etc then you need to get help right away from your Doctor or the ER.

Let us know how you get on.

Wishing you well.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you! No, it isn't draining anymore. It is almost actually closed. I spoke to a doctor on the phone and they said the hard mass I'm feeling is granulation tissue, which is a healthy healing tissue. It will eventually be replaced with collagen (I think?) and scar tissue. I am not feeling sick... just paranoid, but trying to work on that.

Thanks for your input! I'll keep you all posted if anything changes.

Healthy wishes,

Vanessa

Anyone who's had a fistula let alone an abcess can totally empathize, it's the worst and it makes everyone super scared to have it happen again.
