advice needed

I am after some advice. I have been having some problems for well over a year now. The main problem was feeling sick most evenings, lasting for a just over an hour. This year it eased for about a month, but has started up again. I have also found that my bowel habits change quite a lot. Sometimes/days I can have very loose bowel movements and at times can go between 4-7 times a day. Then I will then have formed bowel movements say twice a day. Usually when I have a bowel movement I have to rush to get to the toilet. I get a lot of wind, my stomach makes noises and I burp a lot. At times I get a tender spot just below my ribs in the middle. I feel tired and worn out, feels like I have no muscle strength in my legs/arms etc. I cant seem to put on any weight no matter how much I eat. My bmi is very close to the underweight range. I go months without periods, sometimes get joint pains and have had a rash on my chest that has been there almost all the time for the last year or so. A few days ago I felt so ill, I felt like I had not eaten anything in the whole day and needed something there and then. I saw a gp many times about this who said it was IBS, I was given some medication, which didnt help one bit. Sometimes my stomach can feel very uncomfortable like something is going on down there.

The thing is one of my parents suffered with crohns disease, they needed surgery for it, touch wood since then they have not had any flare ups. At one point a gp suggested having a test (where they insert a flexible wire/camera up your back passage). Does it sound like a good idea. Im at the same age as of when my parent first started having problems. They too went years (almost 10 years) being told they had IBS, but they got so ill, their friends thought they were dying. Thats how ill they looked.

I definately feel that something is going on, but just dont have an answer. Most days I just feel under the weather and never feel refreshed or energised.

Yep the scope is one the best ways to determine if you hav crohns or uc

if your doc is willing/agreeing to book you in for a scope then I'd recomend you doing it
you may get the answers you need an therefore the appropriate treatment

goodluck an welcome to the forum

Hi Smile
and welcome

Bet you're not smilin much these days! Poor you, sounds like you're suffering with an IBD.
I really need to post a sticky on here about IBS! It irritates me that much!
Firstly, a parent has Crohns! That in itself speaks volumes!
Secondly, I don't think your periods would stop for nothing, being underweight may cause this
Having a scope will find answers for you, so my advice? ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist, or a specialist in IBD, and make yourself a list of symptoms and questions to ask him.
GPs, god love em, refer to any belly ache as IBS! So get back there asap and scream for a referral! My gastro said IBS doesn't exist, in his opinion, and he was quite miffed that I had spent the most miserable, saddest 15 years of my life being told I had IBS, then I had a scope and he found Crohns
good luck and any questions just ask
lotsa luv

Thanks for your replies. Ive booked an appointment with my gp. Have felt terrible today. Ive had 6+ bowel movements and a discomfort in my stomach. Im caught halfway between feeling empty (would do after going to the toilet so much) and not feeling hungry from the discomfort. Im a bit worried of eating anything now, will probably just stick to fluids until tomorrow morning.

Do you think my symptoms sound more like IBS or IBD, I think my parent is trying to reassure themselves by saying its IBS, I just dont feel it is IBS.

Welcome Smile,
Your symptoms do sound like IBD. I too was told I had IBS for three years by my GP, two hospital consultants and umpteen hospital docs (I went to Casualty ten times. They put me on morphine then discharged me with Mebeverine. Ho hum..). Now looking back I really can't believe that I didn't throttle one of them since I'd told the docs I'd lost two stone in weight which I knew was a red flag symptom and certainly not an IBS symptom (if IBS exists....I'm a bit skeptical now...).
Anyway, trust your own body. You know when something's not right. Make sure they get your tests done asap so you can get the right treatment.
Good luck,
Gail

Hi SMile:

I agree with the previous posts. You really need to get checked out by a Gastroenterologist so that you can get an accurate diagnosis. Having that will put you mind at ease--in the sense that you will finally have an answer and know what you are dealing with.

I too was diagnosed with IBS for many years prior to my Crohn's diagnosis. I really hope you only have IBS. But if not, you have lots of support here.

I wish you the best.
Chris

Hmm...I am surprised that Nyx hasn't done a survey on how many people have been diagnosed with IBS. Interesting how your GI told you that IBS doesn't exist Joan. I also was diagnosed with IBS. Makes me angry that they could have helped me a looong time ago.
I hope you get answers Smile :)

I think IBS is a BS "diagnosis" when doctors can't find - or won't look for - a specific disease.

Get the scope - it's the best way to see what's going on.

Good luck and please let us know how it turns out. -Amy

just a quick question, when I had some blood tests a while back, when checking for gluten intolerance/allergies etc they found I had a raised IgA level, not sure which one, this was the case on two different occasions 6 months apart. I never asked what this meant, was just told it was nothing to worry about. All I know is that IgA is relate to the immune system and your body fighting something. Has anyone any idea of what this raised level could suggest.

Also, what are the general waiting times for getting an appointment with the specific doctors for tests?
