I've been on AZA for nearly 3 months now and have been getting red pinpoint spots on my arms for a couple of weeks now. 2 weeks ago the spots got a lot worse and were covering my entire body! After going to my GP he told me that if it got any worse and i dveloped a sore thoat or cold like symptoms i should stop AZA untill my hospital appointment, he also took a blood test to see if i was having an allergic reaction. Last week i got a sore throat and cold like symptoms so i stopped AZA. The spots have started to go since i stopped but the the other symptoms have stayed.
I don't have my hospital appointment untill next week and have still not received my blood results.
I just wondered if anyone here ahd any ideas as to what is going on? I am really annoyed as the AZA was working:thumbdown:

You might have been having a generalised reaction to the azathioprine, did you try taking an anti-histamine like benadryl? Or it could have let a bacterial infection a chance to rapidly deploy. Difficult to make educated guesses without data (the blood tests). Have you phoned the hospital/doctors to see when the test results are due?

I just recieved a phone call from my GP with blood test results. Everything is fine inside so that is a plus. He has told me to wait until my hospital appointment next week until I do anything more and that I was right in stopping. Hopefully It isn't an allergic reaction and i can carry on!

It sounds like it could be petechiae which can be a side effect of Imuran.

Good luck hun and I hope with the normal bloods that it is just a passing side effect and it will settle down...

:goodluck:

I had them on my arms when I first started. After a couple of weeks they went away. I managed the side-effects well until my liver was compromised. BE SURE and get your blood tests!!!!! (I did get mine monthly, thank heavens)

I've seen my specialist!
The AZA put me in remission:) however i had to be taken off it as when she looked at my blood test results over the course of taking AZA my white blood count had been dropping rapidly (was told it was the cause of the cold like symptoms). Thank god i decided to stop the AZA when i did!!!

I am now back on Asacol to help keep me stable.

Thank you for all your support!!!!:):)
