For those of you that have had your anus sewn up during ostomy surgery....

How long until this pain starts to subside???? So far this is the worst part of the recovery. My incision pain is mininal, stoma is fine, everything is great except the pain from the stitching in my anus. I can't sit - I can only life with both my head and legs elevated, with my bed in a V to relieve the pressure.

IT HURTS LIKE CRAZY!!!!

Please tell me how yours was and how long it took to recover from that!!

Thanks!

- Ames

I had terrible pain there for about 2 weeks. Then that got better and the bed sores got me! (which lasted for about 4 weeks...aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrghhhh!!!)

Misty

Ack! Bed sores- just from hanging out in bed too much and not moving around????

Joe -CDDad, how about you- how was your butt pain when they sewed you up???

Amy, I moved around alot. The nurses and Dr's were complaining they couldnt find me! I was bombing around the hospital. No idea why I of all people got bed sores on my bottom! (I was a very bad patient...always gone from bed)
Misty

PLEASE - NOT another thing to look forward to?!?!

Sending huge hugs Ames- not that they help a lot when your arse hurts!!

Sorry Amy something I havent had. Wish hugs would help too, but it is all I can offer. Hope you get better soon!!!!!!!

pain

Good gosh Ames!!! A pain in the a#@ is the worst!! I really think that it shouldn't still hurt...Did you flash and ask them to see why the heck it hurts still? Gosh girl..Don't take crap...Give it! Sue

A wise woman once told me...tis better to give an ulcer than receive an ulcer!!! Sue

From what I remember from reading Joe's posts, it can last quite a while (with all the sitting and stuff I would imagine it would take a while to heal). Sorry I don't have experience there myself (yet...but it's coming). Just take the good drugs...lol

Hi Ames,
Initially I did not have butt pain because they must have cut some nerves. I was quite numb. But, after about 2 weeks at home, the pain started. It would come in waves and lasted a few weeks. I was off narcotics as soon as I got home (because of bad reactions to the hard stuff in the hospital). I just used Tylenol around the clock and it took the edge off.

So don't be a (dumb?) tough guy like me and put up with it. What pain killers are you using?

My stitches broke open during my hospital stay, so I had it pretty bad, and there was no sitting for me for a good 2 months. Then I moved to nice thick cusion pads.

I hope you can get that pain down - just get through these first few weeks. Good times are ahead!

Omigosh. I don't like to read words like "weeks" and "months" in relation to this!!! Is it really going to be two months until I can sit??? <faints>

I am on percocets, 2 every 4-5 hours. Intermittent Advil, but I am going to switch to Tylenol and the visiting nurse said she would get the doc to add in Tramadol. Ice packs have been helpful too.

Today is better than last night, which was quite uncomfortable. Lying on my stomach is most comfortable but I can;t do that for long with my stoma.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll keep ya posted! -Ames

Amy hopefully it wont be that long for you! Fingers crossed!
Hoping you feel better in a jiffy!

Hey Amy... Look at it this way, if anyone tells you to pull your head out of your ass or shove it up your ass, you can politely let them know that its sewn up and frankly impossible.

To be extra crass you let them know bad anal pain is and that the person is pretty close to being a major pain in the ass.

Dan

Sorry - but remember my stiches broke open which definitely extended my recovery. I also had Dylplasia so they took "a wider margin". When I got home and finally looked at my wound, I could not believe it. My wife could fit her hand in there.

But, I have also read many accounts where people healed up just fine without too much pain so hopfully you will be one of those.

I'm surprised the percs are helping more - must be some serious pain. Keep feeling better!!!

AAAAAAAAARRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!
I'm so glad you wrote about the many accounts without pain! I'm starting to freak out!! lol!
But then compared to fistulas and an abcess that drained 500mls of puss in your bum - it might not be that bad! lol!

Hi All - Happy to report that the pain is really getting loads better each day! Still controlling it with perkies - I take them every 5 hours whether I need them or not. I just want to stay ahead of the pain.

Joe - OMG. How horrible! That must have been painful and so gross!!!

Today my husband asked if I was going to take a shower. I told him I just took one yesterday and didn't want to wear myself out. He said, "Okay, but just because you don't have an asshole doesn't mean you can't smell like ass." I laughed so hard I thought my stitches would bust!

I have a slight infection in my stomach incision but am on antibiotics so it's already starting to clear up. Other than that, I am really please with my progress so far!!!

- amy

Great news you are feeling better every day! And your hubby is a riot! However I am sure you DONT smell like an ass!

Such good news Amy...well done you!!!

Smushy huggs,
Misty

Your hub sounds hysterical. Its good thing we have good sense of humors -- because us crohnies need it!!!!! S

Hey Amy,
Well that's good news! I'm glad the pain is under control.
Speaking if the ass situation, I must say, our new anatomy is much more hygenic!

My nurse told me I would have a Barbie ass. I think she meant that I wouldn't have a crack to speak of, but I was really hoping that my new ass would really look like Barbie!!!

Where do I sign up for the Barbie Ass? Mine looks more like a Mildred Ass....Still have a crack though (down around my knees) LOL!

How are you feeling today Amy?

Misty

Misty - you kill me!

I am happy to report that the ass pain is really almost non-existent at this point. BUT, it is still sore and I can't sit on it because the soft tissue they pulled out is still like a hot dog sticking out of a bun. I wouldn't dare subject you all to a picture but DAMN is it gross!

The incision pain has now eclipsed the butt pain and the incision pain is very manageable. I am amazed at how much better I feel each day. Still little to no energy. I made myself some eggs today when I got up and had to sit down after a couple minutes! So I will continue to take it easy.

Andrea - SOOOOOOOO happy to see your post. I have been thinking about you!! Big hug right back!!

xo - Ames

Glad I made you giggle...I hope!

I just realized today...even after a week of flu and chest infection...First day back to work after a few days on couch...3 months after surgery...I feel almost normal. 3 MONTHS! (but I'm OLD) Every day DOES get better though! But take your vitamins and eat properly..not like me. I'm the poster child of what NOT to do with crohns and after surgery!

And...KEEP LAUGHING...it's good for the tummy muscles. (or lack thereof in my case...ass muscles...dont make me fart from Stan!)
Misty

I am so happy to hear you are doing much better, Amy! I hope you feel better and better every day. You sure do deserve it!

How is it managing with your new stoma?

Yeah! Ames!!! So, do you think the appliances are pretty much the same as before when you had the temp stoma? Has anything really changed? You are amazing girl! I am so happy to know such an inspiration. The lack of energy must be the toughest, since you like to go go go?! I am curious, did they say the "condition" of your pouch when they removed it? Sue

Hi Sue - The pouch was very inflamed when they removed it. It had adhered pretty well to the surrounding stuff and very much adhered to the back of my vagina. So I am hoping that was the source of painful intercourse I had been experiencing for the last year or so.

I haven't really looked at the bags so much, just using the ones I got at the hospital. But I need to get online and check out the different options!

- Ames

PS Thanks for the kind words from you and from everybody. I am humbled to be considered "an inspiration" - seems weird to think of myself like that!

I only had pains for about 2 weeks back there, I was in the hospital for the duration. I havent had any pains after that.. but this was done in 2008 so my memory might be abit fuzzy, it healed up my fistula(s) thou so it was def worth it for me.

I know everyone is different but was it as bad as I'm thinking its going to be? I was in absolute agony after the first one. How do they do it coz I've already got my stoma had my large bowel removed. Thanks for this do they go thru both stomach and bottom? It was bad enough my stomach last time:-( I'm so scared, I have to make my decision by November then get put on waiting list

I just had my surgery for a permanent ileostomy on July 17. It was sort of an unplanned surgery. I had no idea that they stitched up the bum until after the surgery. I believe the surgery is just thru the abdomen. Stitching up the rectum, I guess, is just to prevent any types of trauma since the area is no longer used. Today was one of my worst days with pain from that area. Sometimes, I feel like my bottom wants to squeeze open for a BM, and I have to remember to relax. My body doesn't feel like it needs to have a BM, just my butt (probably from 17 years of going too much). I don't know why I'm having the increased pain. Nothing looks infected. It is very weird and I feel a little like an alien. :runaway:

Aww I'm sure it will get better was yours keyhole or open? What do you have to do if you feel like you need to go like you used to? Will it go away eventually? Thanks for this x

CheerBear12-
My butt pain was better today. I had an open abdominal surgery. Due to previous ab surgeries, my body built up a lot of scar tissue so my surgeon thought it best just to open me up. They had to remove my j-pouch that I have had for 17 years. My surgeon said that my pouch was buried under "concrete". There was no saving it. I also had part of my small intestine removed due to damage from the Crohn's. As far as the urge to have a bowel movement...I don't really have one. I just notice at times that it seems as if my butt is spreading apart (if that makes any sense), then I will clinch my butt cheeks back together. I don't know how else to explain that. It still hurts to sit at times. Are you just having the anus closed or are you having another surgery as well?

Kacey, I'm having my rectum closed:/ I'm so sorry what you have been through. Does that mean you now have an ileostomy instead of the j pouch? It's so much to deal with hope your ok and coping ok with it xx

Cheerbear,
I do have an ileostomy now. My j-pouch did have to get removed. My colon was removed when I was 18. I'm coping okay. Lots of mood swings which could be from the prednisone. Won't be on that much longer, though. Am weaning. I'm also on Cymbalta for depression. Have been on that for many years, so I think that is also helping with my coping. There are days that I just absolutely hate the fact that I have to live with a shit bag on my stomach. Please excuse my language, but that's really all I can call it at the moment. I have been self conscious for a long time and this has definitely made things worse. The anal stitches are definitely better today. Hardly any pain from them. I pray things go well for you and you have an easy time with the stitch up. Keep me updated. :ghug:

Kacy some days I think I can't cope then I think that it saved my life still hate it tho but I wouldn't be here without it. We have got to think that we have our lives bk. I was depressed before and after mine I think that was a mixture between the pred, and what I was going through. I couldn't have got through it without my family. When do you get them removed? I hope you start feeling better with everything soon. Message me if you need to talk I know what your going through. Thanks a lot will do don't want it:( I hope I cope better this time... xx

I follow up with the surgeon next week, but I think the sutures are the disolvable kind. It is much more convenient to have the bag but at the same time, it's an absolute pain. I dread when summer comes back around and I have to find a bathing suit. Also, some of my comfy shorts show the bag hanging. My family, too, has been a huge support, but they also don't understand everything. I also don't want everyone to know I have a bag, which makes explaining why my surgery was so intense hard. Thank you for having such a listening ear. It helps a lot.

Kacy, you don't need to tell everyone only people you want to know I don't only everyone at works about it coz I was in hospital when I was supposed to be working so couldn't not tell them. If you do tell people they won't think of you any differently they will be glad that your still here. As for summer you should be ok with finding a suit it will go over it ok if you are still worried you could tie a long piece of material around your waist to cover it to make sure people can't see it. I'm worried about summer as well with the heat and apparently it doesn't stick on your body as well.. Good luck with seeing the surgeon next week let me know how it goes I'm sure you'll be fine. Hope this helps and take care xx

My surgery was July 17. I have read others' replies on anal pain. My incision is just a bit sore; the stoma is fine; but the anal stitch up really hurts. The area around the "anus" is hard and very sensitive to the touch. Does this sound normal? I see my GI on Monday and the surgeon on Thursday.

Kacy, if I were you would ask your surgeon and GI as I'm not sure coz I haven't had it done yet. I'm sure you'll be fine and everything will be normal. Good luck and let me know how you get on take care xx

Hi kacy, I had my op in April. My surgeon removed the butt stitches himself after 3 weeks. It felt so much better afterwards. Maybe your surgeon can help, even if your stitches were dissolvable, and things may not feel so tight. Dissolvable stitches sometimes need a helping hand and can be painful. Good luck on Thursday xx

Hi All - Whoa, I can still remember that arse-hole stitch up pain. It was a doozy. But, for me, around day 10 or 12 or so after surgery, I really turned a corner. It went from utter pain to extreme discomfort (in terms of drugs needed, went from 2 percocets every four hours to 1 every 6 or 8!)

Hang in there - it does get better!!

As for bathing suits... I am happy to say I can still sport a two-piece, but it did take me a while to find a skirt bottom that was high enough to cover my appliance. In summertime, I have to change my bag every 2-3 days, while in winter I can get 5-6 days out of a bag.

Overall - life is great! I know there are a lot of anxieties for stoma newbies, but hopefully your quality of life will be so greatly improved that it will overshadow any minor annoyances of having a bag.

- Amy

My GI doc thinks the anal area may be infected. He started me on Keflex and Flagyl. He was unable to reach my surgeon by phone, but I see him Thursday, anyway. I'm hoping to feel better so maybe I can return to work next week.
