just hoping somebody can advise me about pregnancy with fistulas and c sections v natural?any advice or anybody been through similar?

Hi I had a natural birth with my first daughter which resulting in me getting a fistula, It was then recommended for me to have a c section with my second daughter, my doctor told me I should really have had a c section with my first because of my crohn's, I am still having lots of problems with my fistula and my daughter is 15 in June!

hi christie...thanks for your post....i wasnt aware that fistulas can cause problems for such a long time.....hope your coping ok with it? im seeing my obs doc 2morrow as im 35 wk pregnant and these last few weeks my Crohn's has flared up slighty and ive been having symptoms of rectovaginal fistula and prolapse....its horrid and just seems to be getting worse for me! just curious as to what my doc will do in regards to tests/exams to confirm with me being pregnant....also i was meant to having another homebirth but now im really hoping he will let me have c-section as im petrified of vaginall birth whilst ive got all these horrid painfull symptoms.......any thoughts? what type of fistula do you have and what problems has it caused you christie? lovely to 'chat' to somebody who has gone through same and another 'northerner' haha......becky..x

Hi Bex
I've sent you a PM but I also found this thread when I was having a search for some info.
I'll tag pasobuff here too as she has had experience too of pregnancy complicated by fistulas.

Hi - I had multiple fistulas when I was pregnant, and my GYN recommended I have a c-section, as having a natural birth could cause complications such as tearing into the fistula, etc....

I had a successful section, with no complications, and very glad I did. I was able to start Remicade a few months later, and that cleared up the fistulas for me....

If it were me, I would request a section for health reasons. Good luck and congrats!

hi pasobuff....thanks for the info..my gyn recommended natural birth as the fistula is already that advanced and said it needs surgery after i had my baby.....told me to have epidural so i wont feel any pain....there also doing tests when gave birth as they suspect more fistulas internally but cant check whilst pregnant....my Crohn's has flared up yet again, im sure it due to these fistulas and the stress im feeling at the moment, just hope it doesnt affect my baby....so fed up! becky. x

From my experience I would def ask for a c section if I was you, and yes Iv had mine nearly 15 years, I have had so many procedures for it and now I have to just live with it or have my whole rectum removed, I decided on living with it! good luck on the birth of your baby and I am sure it wont affect your baby, let us know how you get on x

hi christie....thanks for your reply...im so sorry to hear that.it must be hard for you? im actually seeing my Crohn's specialist 2moz as he wants to discuss everything with me, so it will be interesting to see what he thinks ( so far its just what my obs doc said) curious if he may want me to have the c-section...im happy to go with whatever he says is safest....will let you know how i get on! becky.x

Wait a minute - the gyn is FOR vaginal birth with an advanced fistula? I don't want to alarm or scare you, but are you aware that you can do more damage to yourself having a vaginal birth with a fistula - such as increased tearing? That was one of the main reasons my gyn was for a c-section! Also, healing can take longer from a 'regular' tear....

Now, this may not apply to everyone, but I personally would be concerned that I might do further damage that required emergency treatment....

My c-section was scheduled, and complication-free.....in fact, I think I only spent 3 days in the hospital!
