Hi all,
Has anyone had any positive experiences using tumeric/cumerin and boswellia extract. I am suppose to be starting 6 mp but want to see if these alternative herbs may help. It's hard to believe that something so simple as tumeric and boswellia could make a huge enough impact on Crohn's. You would think that scientists would have discovered that by now if these herbs were of any significance. Surely, the herbs are a lot better route than humira, prednisone and 6-mp. Any feedback would be so appreciated.

I take both most days. Just because they are anti-inflammatory and have lots of benefits.

I was taking Turmeric, Ginger, and Krill Oil before my last flare. They did not stop the flare. I think of them as supportive supplements but not so much as a treatment.

tried turmeric, helps a little still lots of side effects from it though, its an herb not a fruit so high doses or even chronic low doses will be toxic to some degree.

Wildbill, what kind of side effects did you get with tumeric.....if you don't mind me asking?

dry mouth, and some eye issues. however it may be particular to the state of my body at the time, at one time i did not experiance these issues with turmeric in high doses of at least 1 tsp per day, i think its just diong this now because of the severity of my disease that's all, but the point i'm making is, just because its generally natural doesnt mean its side effect free.

Ok....gotcha. I have suffered with dry eyes and mouth horribly even while on humira. But I will definitely keep notes and watch for side effects. I don't even know how much to take plus there are so many brands out there it is hard to know which ones to take or how much?

grocery store, turmeric is a spice.

Turmeric is good, but it's poorly absorbed. Most of the regular dosing schemes have been disproven now, at least for more systemic inflammation, due to the fact it gets poorly absorbed...I wonder if this is actually MORE beneficial for IBD?

Usually drugs that are poorly absorbed have more substanstivity in the GI system...sorta like oral Vanco...that's used exclusively for C. diff, but if you tried to give IV vanco for C. diff, it wouldnt work as well...or Lialda, or any of the enteric coated 5-ASAs

I am concerned about taking turmeric and Lialda concomitantly...The fact that turmeric can inhibit clotting, much like Lialda or any of the 5-ASAs is a bit alarming.

Never knew there were downsides to turmeric other than possibility of constipation and that it tastes like dirt. Interesting.

It does make the blood more viscous.

I take turmeric,Ginger and Krill oil. They all make the blood more viscous.

Before my last surgery, I quit taking all of those a week in advance. The surgeon Asked afterwards if I took a daily aspirin as he noticed everything he stitched up oozed blood. It was not a problem as the blood did clot but not as quickly as is typical.

I knew my normal blood was too thick. When I would make a blood donation it took me twice as long as everyone else. I also started getting sore point in parts of my legs from forming clots. Not any more.

Pepper or coconut oil taken with Turmeric will increase absorbtion a lot. It is oil soluble.
