Any Vets/Vet techs?

I'm 19 years old and am about to start school for Vet technology and I am also supposed to start my humira injections this week. I know humira weakens your immune system and makes you more open to infections, being a vet tech I would almost always be around open wounds and infections. I have always wanted to do this but now I'm not sure if it's such a good idea. If there are any vets or vet techs out there that are on humira please let me know how you do this!

If you keep yourself properly protected with your PPE (gloves, mask when necessary etc.) You shouldn't have to worry. I have been on remicade for years and my family gets sick more often than I do!

Hi!

There must be loads of medical/nursing staff who take immunity modifying drugs without any real problems, and I would imagine that veterinary staff would not necessarily be at much greater risk, especially as many animal diseases do not cross the species barrier to affect humans.

I think the main area of concern would be to take extra care to avoid or promptly treat any scratches or bites which I'm sure will be an inevitable part of the job (and not unheard of when I was nursing humans!!!).

I have to say that I am only speaking as a cat owner and on azathioprine myself, but I have no particular knowledge of veterinary work as such. There may be someone who can provide a more informed answer for you.

Thanks Nitty! I was just worried about getting the scratches and bites that are almost inevitable with that field. But you're right as long as i take care of them they should be fine!
