Anybody taking Vitamin D? READ THIS

Well I take Vitamin D3. Have just started up again because it is winter time.

I don't believe everything on the internet because one they say it is good for you then another study says it aint. Most times you have to find out who is sponsering it.

Almost everyone here has been low on Vitamin D prior to dx. Just my opinion but I am sure more will say theirs.

HI,

Interesting article.
I take vitamin D everyday, just like Pen, because it is winter time and I find it very very helpful. I also take a b12 everyday.
I am a believer in taking others suggestions into consideration, but, at the end of the day, I take and do what works best for me no matter what they say. I know myself better than anyone else.

Vitamin D is a disease fighter. I'm sticking with my D3 no matter what the season. I know how it makes me feel when I forget to take it, and I don't like feeling that way.

The article is pointing out the difference between D-2 (Ergocalciferol) which is typically the doctor prescribed version of D, at least in the U.S. and D-3 the natural version that already exists in the human body, and is readily available over the counter.

It never made sense to me that the doctor would prescribe D-2 which is not what we need to begin with.

Anyone taking D-3 (Cholecalciferol) has nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the post, Hugh!

As Pen mentioned, sometimes we can't always believe what we read on the internet, BUT, your article reminds us that we DO need to pay attention to exactly what we are putting into our bodies! :)

Exactly!! If we are using the right stuff, then it's all good! :) :) We all know that "natural" is the best way to go, but, like in the eample of Vitamin D ("from the sun"), many of us, due to medications that we are on and such, have to be extremely careful when we go outside and may not be able to even handle that 10 minutes it takes to get a "pink" glow. Then, like Pen mentioned, those of us that live in Northern North America see very little sun in the winter. Like Natalie says, things need to be adjusted depending upon each individual person - you know your own body, so you either know or will learn what is best for you.

But, all additional information is good to! Just remember to use it as guidelines to help you and your doctor find the best fit for each of you! :) :)

In today's Internet world, we have to be very aware of who is feeding us information. For example, the website in the first post is from Dr. Joseph Mercola. Here's what is in Wikipedia on him:

Joseph M. Mercola (born 1954) is a controversial physician, health activist, and entrepreneur practicing in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.[1] He is the author of several books including The No-Grain Diet (with Alison Rose Levy), and The Great Bird Flu Hoax. Mercola is the founder and editor of an alternative-medicine website, where he advocates dietary and lifestyle approaches to health and markets a variety of ostensibly health-related products. Mercola criticizes many aspects of standard medical practice, particularly vaccination and the use of prescription drugs and surgery to treat diseases. He is a member of the politically conservative Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, as well as several alternative medicine organizations.[2]

Mercola has been the subject of criticism from the business, medical and scientific communities. A 2006 BusinessWeek editorial criticized Mercola's marketing practices as "relying on slick promotion, clever use of information, and scare tactics."[3] In 2005, 2006 and 2011 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Mercola and his company to stop making illegal claims regarding his products' ability to detect, prevent and treat disease.[4] The medical watchdog site Quackwatch has criticized Mercola for making "unsubstantiated claims and clash with those of leading medical and public health organizations [and making] many unsubstantiated recommendations for dietary supplements."

Form your own opinion.

While Dr. Mercola isn't perfect (what doctor is), all in all, I find the vast majority of his articles to be quite good. I appreciate the perspective he brings to the table.

I agree, and my daughter who is studying neuroscience says most of the stuff on the internet isn't factual. She says by the time you "follow the money" it is based on some opinions... She rarely uses the internet for information. She has tons of medical books.

The meta analysis was not done by Dr. Mercola, but he made us aware of it, and provided a link to the abstract.

It does support his opinion that D-3 is what people should use as a supplement, if they cannot get enough from food or sunlight. It appears he was right and the majority of the doctors were wrong. Even though it seemed so obvious that is hard to believe it is not common practice to recommend D-3 over D-2.

I take D3 daily, just started two weeks ago, and I noticed a huge difference in how I feel, especially the joints.

Well I wonder if it is a US phenomenon? I have never known a doctor here to prescribe anything other than D3 for deficiency.

Just an article from the National Prescribing Service here in Oz regarding Vitamin D supplementation...

Agreed David. I find Dr. Mercola to usually be really interesting and knowledgeable. I like him overalll, and I usually hate internet doctors. This article is not saying to not take Vitamin D, just to be sure that you are taking D3.
