Hi there and welcome to the community.

There are indeed a few members from India here. I know Sid is but I forget the names of the others. Sid should be by some time later today or tomorrow to say hi :)

Would you like to tell us a little about yourself?

*edit* Or he'll be by in 8 minutes. :)

Hi Shalini, welcome to the forum..I am from Calcutta..was diagnosed few months back with CD that made me join this great forum. I can see you're from Chennai. May I ask you about your Crohn's story in brief. This is an amazing forum Shalini and you'll get a lot of suport and info out here.

Hi....I am a 32 yrs old female....blessed with a caring husband and a 3 yrs old daughter.....I am an IT professional ...worked for the past 10 years in various MNC's.....was highly succesful in my career.....travelled onsite and was living in colorado springs for one and a half years.....in short I had my world at my feet.....post delivery I started having loose stools followed by severe abdominal pain.....had nausea, bloating along with mouth ulcers. Saw many doctors....no one was able to diagnose my disease properly..my health detoriated day by day with severe weight los s i had to quit my job as i was getting sick day by day....atlast I was admitted in a reputed hospital in chennai where they diagnosed it as crohn's after doing all possible tests on earth....

I was on pentasa, azoran along with vitamin supplements for two mnths but I showed no improvement. I had severe bloating and after doing xray and ct scan they said my ascending colon is distended andsurgery is the only option. They explained me abt stoma and I was shocked. Butmy doctors reassured me that its temporary and I can have a reversal after 3 months......

I had my ileostomy surgery in vellore and they removed my ascending, transverse and part of descending colon as I had pseudo polyps. I was getti.g well post surgery, ate well and gained few pounds . I had my reversal in sep 12 and was very happy. I wished reversal to be my last surgery..but god had other plans......I had stomach cramps in november duri.g our diwali eve and doctor said its intestinal obstruction due to adhesions. I was conservatively managed for 3 days, but my vomitting didn't stop. So I underwent another open surgery two weeks back...3 open surgeries in 5 months window and feel low at times.

Am on pentasa, azoran with vitamin supplements....

Hi Shalinico,

I'm so sorry to hear of your struggles :( My heart goes out to you.

Here in the USA we call azoran, "azathioprine" and the brand name version is, "Imuran". So if you see other talking about those medications, they're on the same medication as you. What dose are you on out of curiosity?

How are you doing after your latest surgery?

What vitamins are you on?

I am sorry to hear that you have had so many troubles recently :( Do you now have another stoma? Do the docs plan to change your meds at all to try and get better management of the disease?

sad to know you had gone through those troubles shalini..but dont loose hope...most of use out here have gone through these things and we know how it feels. This desease not only takes you down physically but mentally too. You may feel very depressing at times, but its all upon you, how you take it..with time people have learnt to manage their crohns in different ways...for example..I found that vegetarian diet and disciplined lifestyle keeps me in remission and I can lead almost a normal life...similarly there are people who have found remission through medicines, special diets, exercise,etc...similarly am sure more knwoledge about these desease will help you find your unique way to manage yoru crohn's and lead a normal life again. I know it isnt easy..but there is 100% possibility to get back normal life if you listen to your body and gather more info about this desease. ..If you dont mind me asking can you tell us what are the symptoms you are facing right now ?

oh ok....

Iam on pentasa 1 gm thrice daily and 50 mg of azathioprine...

I also take shelcal 500 mg twice daily with zincovit, methycobal 1000 mcg and livogen.

@david, in case you dont get (as they are brand names) Zincovit is a popular mutvitamin and Livogen is an iron supplement in India.

edit : and shelcal is a calcium + vit D supplement.

Thanks for the ray of hope...

Fortunately I don't have a stoma now as they just released my adhesions with no major incisions and my previous ileostomy site was also normal.

My next review is on dec 20 2012.....actually the doctor said that adhesions are formed because of the previous open surgeries,, the more you open the more adhesions you get, but sunce I didn't show any improvement using conservative method, they did one more open surgery to remove the obstruction.....

Am still woried abt adhesions......I don't want to have more surgeries coz of adhesions or for anything else....have any1 faced such problems with adhesions? Is open surgery the only solution?

Hi Shalinico! I replied to you on a different thread, but thought I should post here instead. It sounds like you have really had a very tough year!

They say that right in the beginning when you are diagnosed, is sometimes the worst because by the time they figure out what is wrong, you are pretty sick. And then, in the future you know what to look for.

Given all you have been through, I am surprised that they only have you on Pentasa and azoran. Do they have any of the anti-TNF meds over there like Remicade?

I was also wondering if it is true that in India everyone boils their milk? Sounds like a strange question, but there are some who believe that due to your diet over there, Crohns is not as prevalent. I was just wondering what you thoughts were about this.

Three open bowel surgeries is a lot in 5 months. I did a little bit of research for you and found the following link informative:

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/intestinaladhesions/index.aspx#what

If you have any future adhesions, as long as there is not a complete obstruction, and only partial, perhaps suggest going on a liquid diet or low residue diet to avoid surgery.

I am so glad you found us. There is plenty of support and friendship to be found here, and people who can share in your feelings.

Welcome shalinico,
Super excited you joined us! We are here to offer support and opinions, some have been thru what you are going thru exactly. We are also here to listen and help in any way possible. Are you making a list of questions for your next visit? Like, what are my vitamin levels- are they low, I'm feeling down- is there any other meds ( antidepressants) i can take safely or natural treatments or therapy, how can we work together to monitor this condition so i can avoid further surgeries, is there a local support group? That's what I'd start with anyway. Sure hope yo get feeling better. Good luck on your journey. Keep us informed! - hugs-

Hi all, thanks for ur prompt reply.

I immdly got admitted in vellore hospital once I had stomach cramps and vomiiting. Doctors did an xray and confirmed that its obstruction due to adhesions. I was managed conser atively for 72 hs as they didn't want to operate immdly.....I had one NG tube inserted in my nose for 4 days and was only on IV, but no improvement, vomitting didn't stop and was bileus in nature, so they decided to operate.

When I asked them how to avoid such adhesions in the future they simply said trust in god.......am really worried....

Hi Shalini

Am frm bangalore had fistula surgerys in dec 11 for 2 fistulas one healed within 3 mths the other is just now showing signs of healing. I feel right now my crohns is under control though My CRP always hovers around 10 so doc says still have to be under control am on azoram and assacol and montly b12 injection. Get montly CRP LFT and CBC done.

Keeping my finger crossed and hoping by the time the next bout hits me Remicade becomes generic. outside food is the toughest have found that pepper/dry spices agrivates it and fresh food even Green chilly does not have any effect.

Dont visit the forum often only rarely since after reading some of the stories the future looks bleak, the first few months are the toughest.
