Like the subject line says, it seems I can no longer have Chinese food, which I love a lot. So far, every time I had it and no matter which dish I had a blow out after! So not cool. Anybody any idea why that is? Is that a general thing with Crohn's or more a personal "disfunction?" :shifty:

I find that the msg in most Chinese food really bothers me; if I can get it without msg, I am usually all right.

Hmmm, I haven't checked on that one. Usually, they kinda advertise the non-use of MSG but I admit I didn't look for it yesterday.

Oh, I used to love Chinese food! I would frequent one restaurant so often that the staff knew my name. They never could pronounce my last name correctly thought, substituting a W for the R in it. It was cute. Had to eventually give up on the food. I figured it was all the fiber in the vegetables that did me in.

MSG has a bad wrap. The portion of the population that actually has an issue with it is minuscule. Most of it is psychosomatic, it's the "stranger danger" of the food world. However, MSG does contain some gluten as does most soy sauce.

If you dont want MSG, dont have any spices in ANY food then, because it isnt just Chinese food by the way!

Its some of the veggies that have probably caused the issue Heike. Or bean sprouts. Or their cabbage. Try avoiding those, enjoy the rice and the meats at will, and see if that makes it better.

@stickman: Good idea with the sake. But, since it was a work day lunch, we refrained, even though it was in celebration of a birthday!
@Misty: I had the Kung Pao .... and I didn't sort out the nuts!

But, overall, I remember that I had a blow-out the last time I had Chinese Food too, so it couldn' have been just that ... probably a mixture of things because they combine some of the "evil" foods in the dishes, like veggies, mushrooms and nuts!

Oh, and the birthday girl had the runs yesterday ... coinicidink???? I think not!!! :(

Wasn't mine ... a coworker who is also German and since I cannot give her anything related to Germany (she has the drop on me there by having access to the commissary) I thought a lunch would be a nice gift. Ha ...good intentions and all that :\

oh, i usually order mine without veggies!

usually a dish with boiled rice... boiled rice is very easy on the stomach.

getting hungry!! lol

Chinese food is my favorite! I would die without it. Luckily it hasn't seemed to bother me, even with MSG. (I do not care, MSG is delicious).

I love Chinese food also, although I can either tolerate well or it gives me serious grief. Maybe msg realated as it depends on what I have or the restaurant or take away in question.

For the stoma-world, my understanding is that Chinese vegetables can be an issue because they don't really break down (I know that when I eat spinach, it comes out looking like chewed up spinach, and Chinese greens are less likely to break down than spinach...). And then there's some of the other "oh no no" stoma vegetables in chinese foods: baby corn, mushrooms and celery.

I love chinese food, and stick to 'chicken and broccoli' kinds of dishes. Or like littlefreebird, i stick to the meat dishes. Oh, and soup!

Hope you're feeling much better, Heike!

@ Michelle: Visibly there was not much difference but I felt Lucy (my stoma) working really hard ... then all the sudden the telltale trickle. And, it wasn't so much the difference but the fact that the last two times I had Chinese food I happened to have a blow-out. So, not really sure what is causing it, just deducting that Chinese food with the exception for the rice and noodle dishes are not all that good for me. Could have been the larger amounts of veggies, mushrooms and/or nuts.

I love Chinese food too but I guess I have to be more careful in selecting dishes and see how that will work out in the future

In that case, I wouldn't be surprised if your stoma is expanding a lot to get the veggies out which causes a weakness in the seal maybe? The last time I ate chinese I did have a lot of undigested veggies in my bag! I'm used to not eating veggies pre my op though so going without doesn't bother me.

I still wouldn't give up eating chinese though! Maybe just forgo eating the veggies or making a very conscious effort to chew them well! Also mushrooms are very undigestable.. I still try to not eat them!

I know ... mushrooms are EVIL! Even on a slice of pizza they just come through undigested. I think this time it was the Kung Pao nuts. I just didn't take the time to go through the diswh and sort them out.
I promise to myself to be better in the future and I am grateful to Lucy and the appliance to wait until I was home before leaking! ;)

I love chinese food but can't have super greasy or oily food anymore. I eat chicken fried rice and/or veggie rolls egg rolls....good stuff!

@ Heike ~ I have a HUGE problem with most Chinese foods, too.
But what I've discovered is that I can eat Japanese foods very often.

Just a thought... I hope it helps.

Dont forget the saki!! Yum, I love japanese food. Good luck Heiki with that, and try it and see. I do eat chinese, but I dont eat all the veggies, just the ones I think Stan wont punish me for.

Curries are so over and especially satay sauce , explosive within 5 minutes. I had to knock on a complete strangers door as I was at a outdoor event. Really embarrassing. Lucky she was very understanding as she was a nurse midwife

I think i have been quite lucky till now as i haven't faced any of the mentioned or any other problem after having Chinese food. I love Chinese food, especially the Chinese noodles.
