Hi!

I have been lurking here the last month or so. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease the middle of May. It all happened pretty fast from the time I started having abdominal issues to the time of diagnosis...less than a month. At 37, it was a surprise to be diagnosed with this, I wasn't quite prepared and have been having issues coming to terms with all of this...but that for another post.

They started me on Prednisone and I have been tapering down over the last two months, I am now at 15mg and have started Asacol HD 800 three times daily. My Dr. had me start at just one three times daily to see if I tolerated it ok, I have been doing good so I increased to 2 three times daily on Saturday for a total of 3200mg a day.

I have been having some consistent headaches that will not go away over my eyes, down the sides of my nose and under my eyes...almost like bone pain. I suffer from migraines and this is different than that. Tylenol is not even touching it. Anyone experience that? Is it coming off the prednisone or a side effect of the Asacol? It's getting exhausting.

Thanks!

The location sounds like it might be a sinus infection maybe? But I have heard most headaches are due to dehydration. Maybe up your water intake and see if that helps?
I did very well on asacol for quite a while. I hope it works well for you.
Welcome to the forum. Sorry you have to be here, but glad you found us.

When I was first diagnosed, I had horrific headaches!! It actually sent me to the ER one night. And it is different from migraines....I hear that its pretty common to get them, especially when you first start treatment. Maybe get checked for sinus infection as well. I wish you luck~

Hi Klowee:welcome:. Sometimes prednisone can cause it or you could be having a reaction to Asacol, hard to say. When ever I have certain meds, I got a nausea headache.

You are lucky to get a quick diagnosis, too bad it turned out to be Crohns. Lots of information here, hope you join our community. :hang:

Hi Klowee

I get headaches from some of my meds - or as a result of the combination of meds. I also get sinus infections too, and I would get that checked out as well due to the locations you are experiencing the pain. I am wondering if you have any nasal or facial swelling. Sometimes I get that with the sinus infections. I hope you find a solution or management to it. Hang in there and welcome to the forum.

Hey,

Sounds like your sinus to me, I suffer with this all the time, and I really think this is to do with food intake. Maybe try keeping a food diary and sympton diary and see if any foods trigger it. Lactose in milk does it for me. But also mention this to your doc as it could be something to do with your medication, everyone is so different its hard to say why your suffering with this.

hope they go away soon, you don't need that on top of everything else hey.

Jo x

Thank you all for your kind welcome and great input. I hadn't considered my sinuses...funny how your mind immediately goes to all the extremes of this disease than to something more obvious like that. I have a f/u with my dr. on Mon. so I will have them check that out.

I have not been that good about my water intake the last several days, I will do better on that. I have been tracking my diet on a food log, I went in to see a nutritionist and she is having me eat a pretty low residue diet and rating my pain scale at various times. I meet with her on Thurs. so I will ask her about this as well.

I have completely given up dairy (I miss milk so badly!!!) But have learned to like soy in my coffee and smoothies so it is working out ok.

Anyway, thanks again for everything, you all are wonderful!

Hi Klowee - I am also recently diagnosed - May 10 - and was put on Prednisone and tapering that down - currently on 20mg until this weekend, then 17.5mg etc etc...hope to be off it early August...:D

I was also put on Salazopyrin (Sulfasalazine) which gave me headaches so my specialist changed my medication to Mezavant (mesalamine) and I felt much better.

Your headaches could be from sinus or the meds but best to see what your Dr thinks when you go back. Hopefully it will all be ok soon.

Welcome to the forum - I have found it to be a welcome relief to read everyone else's experiences - it just reinforces that you are not the only one going through all this.

Vicki :)

Hi Klowee
and welcome

it could be a number of things, Pred withdrawal or reaction to Asacol, or a rebound headache caused by neck and shoulder pain, joint pain is common with Pred withdrawal, or it could be analgesic pain, a weird phenomenon where the painkillers cause your headaches, or sinuse pain, that really hurts when you put your head down.
don't take any NSAIDS tho, bad news for a Crohnie!
lots of support here for you
lotsa luv
