Hi everybody, I have a quick question. Im currently on 50mg of Azathioprine with about 9-10 months. I was on this medication 5 years back and I was on 100mg. I weigh 70kg at the moment, when I was taking 100mg I was around 65kg. I think I should be on up near the 100mg for my bodyweight. I find the medication is not working like i hoped for, so I am wondering if my dosage is a little low.

I would just like to know what dosage other users are on for their bodyweight. I know every person is an individual case, but I just want to get a rough idea, basicially to see if my dosage is a little low.

Thanks,

Alan

Hi Alan,

The dosage is usually calculated at 2-2.5mg per kilo of body weight, so 150mg should be closer to your target dose. If you had no issues last time you were on it then I don't know why they have you on the current dose. I assume you have no issues this time?

My son is on 100mg and he is 50kgs.

I weigh 67kg and im on 150mg, has the doc given you any reason why youre on such a small dosage? Would be worth asking as it may be they just forgot to up you up

OK I'm in the US, so I'm about 120lb and I take 100mg right now and before surgrey I took 150mg hope this helps:)

HHmmmm, I am just starting on 50 mg and GI wants me to step up 50 mg each week until I get to 250 mg. I am 230lbs.

I have been put on this medication today as an alternative to pentasa. I'm 60KG and 100mg a day.

I've been taking 150mg of azathioprine for about 4 years. I've weighed 180-210 pounds on this dosage (about 92 kgs right now), heavy for a girl obviously....but I thank the prednisone for that. I know that I had to gradually increase my dosage, and get blood work done bi-weekly for about 6 months, and monthly since then. Azathioprine can do serious damage to your liver and they have to monitor you closely on it....there are different reasons why they may not want to up your dosage...I would definately talk to your doc if you're concerned!

Hi guys sorry I havent been on since I posted this, I was having some broadband issues. I had a recent visit to my doctor and we spoke at length about the dosage. I didnt find that 50mg was helping as much as I wanted, so we decided that we would up the dosage to 100mg. I have been taking 100mg for about two weeks now, and so far so good it seems to be helping. I get my blood tested every month.

I also made one slight change to my eating habits, I went back eating brown bread instead of white, I stopped eating it a few months ago for no particular reason. I used eat it before and I found it helped my bowels. So I am also back eating the bread with about two weeks and I am feeling good.

Hope everyone is doing good.

hi alan
hope you are doing fine
i am 60 kg & i start on imuran 4 months ago , first month i was taking 50 mg then my doctor increase it to 100 mg but still suboptimal response , so now doctor increase the dose to 150 mg daily and i am waiting for the response .
the doctor said the dose should be between 1.5 to 2.5 mg and i read study in the internet that the imuran dose should be between 2 to 2.5 mg to give the response.

all the best of luck

Hi Alan: Your dose is below what's recommended for your body weight, per what the others have said. I hope that you can get things sorted soon, since you are not seeing the expected results.

I had to try about 5 different ways to get my GI to see this same thing last Monday. Finally, he had me step on a scale, did the calculation again, and said, "you're being under-medicated!" No kidding. Surely the 2 fistulas would have clued in him.
