b-12 pills stuck in small bowel!

Hi all-
My first post. Quick background. 33 yr old female. Have had Crohn's since 1999. Done pretty well with one remicade infusion and 6MP for years. Had two kids. After having second child I couldn't get into remmission. Two rounds of prednison, 6MP and Humira didn't work. Going in Monday for Bowel resection surgery. But I just thought some people might find what we found interesting.

I knew I had blockage from scar tissue and inflammation in small ilieum but what I didn't know was that I had about 24 little b-12 time released vitamins stuck in there as well. Crazy! We saw them in the barium x-ray-knew it was them because they showed up white because they are made mostly of calcium and their shape. Anyway, apparently the PH balance is different in your colon than your intestines so they don't absorb until get in colon. Also, my small ilieum is pretty blocked so that is why they weren't moving into the colon but I'm sure they were helping my blockage downward spiral. I just thought I would warn people about time released vitamins, etc. Sound like most people get the B-12 injections anyway but check out your vitamins and make sure they absorb easy or get liquid. Anyway-nerved up for surgery but also kind of ready. Just want ot be healthy again.

Omg-I didn't know that can happen with vitamins-thanks for the heads up. Sending good wishes for a speedy recovery and better health your way:)

Hi there and welcome to the forum!! I have never used time release tablets always sublinguals and now B12 shots more absorbable and needles dont bother me.

I have had two resections, one laproscopic and the other regular. Glad you found us, lots of information here, ask any questions and please keep us updated on your surgery. Best of luck and what kind of surgery do you think you are having? Healing hugs.

Good luck with the surgery... I have had three since being diagnosed in '93 and they all went great and relieved symptoms for a time. A note on the pills... if you don't get B12 shots, or you take iron supplements instead of getting the infusions, there are always pharmacies that will "special make" your pills for you. Try to find an apothecary in the phone book and tell them what vitamins or supplements you need, what your condition is, and where exactly in your bowel the problem is... you get the same supplements but with different time releases, different binding agents, and different capsules. I live in a pretty small town and even we have a place that will do it here for no extra charge.
