I'm have Crohn on the terminal ileum and a stricture there too. I'm on Prednisolone for a month now. I'm experiencing back pain on the right side. It's not the lower side, it's somewhere in between the hip and the ribs. I've been feeling this kind of discomfort before the treatment but it was quite mild and felt more as a discomfort. I have to specify that this kind of discomfort I usually feel when I lie down on my back or when my back is against something. Now, the discomfort becomes so sore, so intesne that I can't lie down on my back. It's on and off, not a continue one.

I'm just wondering if this kind of soreness (discomfort) has anything to do with the stricture.
Has anyone else felt a discomfort (soreness) on the back?
cause I was thinking it's a side effect of the Prednisolone but I know for sure that the discomfort I'm experiencing now I used to have it before, just not as intense as it's now. Or would that be a sign that I'm developing a fistula?

Hi aboarna.

I was diagnosed in August of 2011 with terminal ileum Crohn's (like you). Back pain was one of my first symptoms. As my flair intensifies, I get constant back pain primarily on the right side of my back at the waist. I typically also get side pain and lower abdominal pain as well.

If I wake up in the morning feeling like a "ragdoll" (like I was thrown around the room) in my thoracic/abdominal area, I know my flare is getting worse.

This past week, I had a Hida Scan to check out the functioning of my Gall Bladder (also on the right side of the body). I haven't received the report but was told my GB is functioning low, which may be causing or complicating some of my symptoms. Also, I have not reached remission yet. I just have varying degrees of active flare.

I’ve been on/off Prednisone and cannot isolate my back pain to prednisone use. My GI is actually starting me on Prednisone again today because my pain is increasing. I recently had a negative (no findings) small bowel series, which is typically used to diagnose fistulas and strictures. Of course no test is 100% and everyone is different, but my GI does not think I have either.

Like most others, I have a TON of other symptoms too. I hope my info (and vagueness) helps you.

My daughter experienced back pain on the right side similar to what you are describing.

She also has Ileal Crohn's and hers was a result of hydronephrosis. It happens when the inflamed and swollen terminal ileum presses against the right ureter causing it to partially or fully obstruct. This then obstructs the flow of urine out of the kidney, as a result urine backs up causing the kidney to swell and that equals pain!

Once the inflammation is brought under control the problem will resolve itself, providing it hasn't been left for too long.

Do you think the Pred is working?

If it persists I would have it checked out. It may well be the bowel itself but if not hydronephrosis is easy enough to diagnose with either a scan or ultrasound.

Another thing to consider is the possibility of a kidney stone....been there, had them!.....in fact have my annual follow up with my urologist tomorrow afternoon....
 
I am on pred also and have back pains but mine are just the lower back in the center. I do have gall stones, I am actually scheduled for surgery first thing in te morning to have my gall bladder removed. I will let you know of it goes away after that.
 
Hmmm...

this post caught my eye. I've been having a feeling in my back. I wouldn't necessarily call it pain (a twinge, discomfort, small spikes of pain sometimes) in my back as well, but it's more on my left side. I've had issues with my colon before so I'm wondering if that's what it might be.

I do have a Kidney Stone on that same side, but it's too big to go anywhere (I've been putting off the surgery to get ride of it) but I think it's probably too low to be my kidney.

I've been off Prednisone for a few months now but am currently on Entocort. So I'm not sure what it could be from. I'm slightly worried about it but trying not to worry. If you find out anything, please let us know.

I have to say that the back pain (the discomfort) on my right side has settled down. It's not so strong anymore, I can even say that the pain is gone, but I'm feeling a bit sensitive on that side (it's probably just in my mind, just the thought of it makes me think that it's still there), even if probably it's nothing - I don't know if I make sense ..

I have to mention that I'm still on Prednisolone (25mg/day, tapering off 5 mg every week) and Pentasa.
Hopefully, Prednisolone works for me and the inflammation it's under control.
I'm seeing my GI specialist next week so I can't wait to find out if I'm in reemission or what.
I need some good news right now!! :)

ok..I'm back from my specialist.
The good news is that the inflammation is down to 3, Vitamin B12, Iron and Folate are normal, the white cells are a bit high (but, the specialist said that it could be because of the steroids), and the haemoglobin (red cells) is a bit low but stable (stable - considering the last test, low - considering that I have Thalassemia).

He explained to me that having 3 for the inflammation it doesn't mean that I'm in remission. I have to have a colonoscopy done to find out if I'm in remission or not.

The problem is that the last test I've had done in December didn't show that I have problems with the thyroid. Now after one month and 2 weeks of Prednisolone, the test for thyroid is not good.
Has anyone had problems with abnormal thyroid test while on Prednisolone?

Dusty, when your daughter had this problem, did she find it difficult to pee? I often feel the urge to pee, especially in the morning and during night (so when I am laying down?), but when I try to go, it is a real effort to get it out. It just seams to trickle. I have been attributing this to age, but I also have a good deal of back pain on most days.
 
I'm on remicade or infliximab and have been noticing back pain. I thought it was perhaps the extra weight I had put on from previously taking pred, then I bought it was because of a different bed. Now I'm back in my own bed, still have lower back pain and reading this forum, are thinking it may be from meds. Who knows? So many things to try and eliminate as always.
 
Prednisone

Been on Prednisone for a month and I also have hypo-thyroid disease and my numbers are off and was told sometimes prednisone does do that. I also have some back pain but attribute this to my flare, mine happens to be on the upper left side....going today to get results from MRE that I had....hopefully some answers or solutions......have a painfree day :rosette1:

Backpain really sucks. And you don't know what to do just to ease the pain.

I found a lot of healing properties through the use of Yoga and relaxation techniques I also see a NUCCA Chiropractor that helps me to maintain good spinal health as well. Buying a new bed and body pillow has alos helped tremendously. I strongly recommend using a body pillow. Not only are they cheap but they help to reduce pain and stress in the lower back. Hope this helps :)
