Okay, let's see if I can figure out how to explain this so it makes sense to y'all.

I've never really given my lower back aches much thought other than things like, "that's where I carry stress" or "eh, most of my father's family has some sort of back pain. It's not terribly bothersome, so, it's okay." Blah blah blah. But here lately, I'm noticing its connection to my other favorite sore spot... my bum.

It seems to ache more the worse my gut feels. And the pain seems to get REALLY bad when I'm actually using the toilet. Bad enough that, since it seems the worst of the day is always right before bed for me, it's hard to get comfortable enough to sleep. Pillow between the knees to keep the hips aligned, etc.

When my gut seems to be doing well, my back doesn't hurt at all. It's annoying. :(

Anyone experience anything similar? Or am I a weird one?

Oh yes....this is a familiar tune. For me - when my low back is hurting for no explainable reason and my gut is messing up - I know it means I have inflammation. Transfers to other areas of the bod - especially closely located areas next to your bowels.

Oh yeah! Low back pain always signals a flare, particularly in the low bowel/rectal area. When I have low back pain, my GI does a sigmoidoscopy and sure enough, it'll be ulcerated. Has the GI given you any Cortifoam, or Rowasa enemas? They work pretty well for me, along with Arava, Pentasa, and Methotrexate. Maybe see a Rheumatologist, too, my joints flare RA style with Crohn's-ahh, the fun never ends!:ybatty:

Hi Jess, I've had low back pain on and off for years. When I was admitted and diagnosed it was really bad. I expect that was from the inflammation and infection - referring pain?

I dunno but it all makes sense as it's all so connected.

I'm sitting here now in the UK at 01.47 with screaming lower back ache. I know this is the start of the whole process starting again, next it will be worsening tummy ache and then loo time!!!!!

Hot water bottle - the only way to go!!!! :)

Yep my crohns is down the lower end of the bowel
so I live with back pain all the time

I've called him Barney, so wen me back starts achin I'm like "f@*Kin Barney get off me back" lol

oh hi Barney back again are ya lol

I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, which is an inflamatory arthritis of the sacroiliac joints at the base of the spine.

It's very common in Crohn's patients, both conditions being autoimmune in nature.

When it's flaring badly, it can affect the bowels. It can mimic a number of Crohn's symptoms.

OMG that's what I'm going through, but I haven't thought AS. I just had X-rays yesterday, scared waiting for results.

Hi Jess.. yep lower back pain alright!! It was one of my first main symptoms which seemed to puzzle the doctors, until I was diagnosed with Crohns. It seems to only be bad when Im having a flare, once I get it under control I notice the back pain goes away too.
Its just another thing to add to the list of crohn related issues... JOY!!! :)
I can totally relate to having trouble sleeping with the pain mine seem to increase when I actually tired to lay down didn't know whether it was the pressure on my insides that cause my back to scream in pain but was the worst feeling in the world would make me very nausated as well. Good luck hun hope it settles down soon for you.

Aw man! Mine hasn't been named anything other than Arthritis of the spine.

Yikes. Well, not happy everyone else seems to experience this because it feels absolutely debilitating at times. :(

It's just when the attacks hit me, they hit hard. The lower back pain (like hip level) is a killer part. It also starts to feel almost like a UTI in that I keep feeling like I have to pee. Little bit will come out, but really, my bowels are moving. But then I get frustrated (usually cause my bum hurts too much), so I decide I'm gonna try to hold it. Never works anyway, but the sensation I have to pee gets me up and going. Then, my gut laughs knowing it pulled a good bait and switch on me.

Yeah, my GI told me the reason us girls get that feeling to urinate is because the bowel swells to the point of pressing against the bladder as well as kidneys. Joy,joy, huh ladies?

us ladies are soooo lucky....

...i am having a pretty awesome flare and having back pain...never really had it before, but this flare has been going for a few weeks so reckon its due to that..

its like i have been sleeping in the bath or something, really achy, muscular, and cant get comfy in bed even with a hot water bottle....didnt realise it may be related...but thats interesting about the lower inflammation, mine is in my colon anyway so that makes sense....mmmmm

up the painkillers...yum :)

Yeah lower back pain, to add insult to injury
when I went to A&E last month screaming in agony, they said I had a kidney infection, they had to scrape me off the ceiling when they touched my lower back, god it was worse than childbirth! and that's saying summit! I was shouting 'I've got Crohns, its not my kidney etc'
Anyway, my gastro came to see me in hospital, we talked about the back pain, and he said it's a defo indication of something flaring, a major inflammation, nausea, diarrhea, wanting to wee (and only a bit comes out) and infection setting in. Its all connected, you see.
My advice? get to A&E pronto or your doctor, dont ignore it, I did for 24 hours, and nearly ruptured my bowel
lotsa luv xx

I have been having this problem lately, but I'm a guy which is the funny part. Mine occurs right when I first wake up to the point were I can barely get out of bed (usually takes me a half hour). The back pain will slowly go away as the day moves on and i'm usually ok when I go to bed if i haven't eaten a ton of food. When I pee it doesn't burn but I always have to start and stop like 3 times in the process and I never feel like I get it all out. I thought it was a kidney infection too but I have no fever whatsoever. So I'm not sure what the deal is either.

Pain in your back can cause abdominal pain and abdominal pain can cause back pain. The stress put on one area radiates to the areas nearby.

I used to get physical therapy for my back pain when I was in High School. I was having a flare at the same time.

For the past 4 days, I've had really bad back pain. It hurts to lay down in any position. I even went as far to lay on the other side of the bed to see if the bed was the cause but it hasn't helped. Pillow between the legs doesn't help either. Soon I'll have to take pain killers but you shouldn't take those forever. I'm not sure if it's related to my crohns or not. I haven't had a flare yet since my surgery in 1999. Plus the scope I had showed nothing. But my back hurts and I haven't had a Hot Pocket recently. Hope a Jim Gaffigan fan gets that joke. :p

hiya
have a look at the thread called sacroiliac joint pain about TENS machines and acupuncture

I had lower back pain thought it was the Crohns radiating and turn out I had kidney stones... a way to tell is drink alot of water and if the pain is gone, it could be stones or kidney problems, if not,,,, could be the radiation of swelling. Let us know ok.

I also start having more back pain with the onset of a flare. One thing I have done is having my Amish chiropractor give me an adjustment and for me it seems to help head of a flare for the most part. But what works for one doesn't always work for another.

Chiropractor Hollywood Florida

I too suffered from it, i had a lower back pain especially when i manage to sleep, it was too hard. so made my way to the Chiropractor of sesinjurycenter Hollywood Florida, he helped me a lot to getaway from it. Now i am better than the before days. :):)

don't be to scared of Ankylosing Spondylitis. it's not fun but it's the same treatments as crohn's so just as come together they leave together.

watch out for chiropracter if you do have AS since you back is fused, it can also be brital and there for can be problematic.

Go see a rhematoglist.

Hi, I'm a newbie. My mom has crohns (diagnosed while pregnant with me 38yrs ago) and she does not get the back pain. I have thought it was related but since my connection to crohns didn't have it it was unrelated. Today, it was so bad that I actually lay rocking in fetal position to get relieve. Luckily a heating pad has helped tremendously!!

I am on flagyl and Pentasa right now but go back on Monday to see what else can be done. My symptoms are COMPLETELY different than my moms. Mine is in my descending colon, hers is in the ilium. She had a resection done. I have gone through the gamut of symptoms the past three weeks. Now, mostly it is pain on my lower left side, back and occasionally behind my belly button.

I'm glad to read I'm not a complete odd ball. ;)
