We pay a monthly fee for our bank account which includes travel insurance for our whole family. I phoned to add that I had been diagnosed with Crohns, fully expecting to be able to pay slightly more to cover me for our summer holiday, only to be told they won't cover me for anything Crohns related or and bowel obstructions occurring while im away. Will need to get separate travel insurance for myself now but not sure where's best to get it from or what sort of cost I'm looking at. Any direction from someone in the know would be great.

I just did a search for travel insurance with existing medical conditions. Found a couple online and declared my sons Crohns. They just asked a few questions - I think because he hadn't had any abdominal surgery, they were happy enough. Think it was only about £40 so not too bad.

Hi

I've had travel insurance through insure and go. I can't comment on how they deal with claims but they have given me competitive quotes.

Travel insurance is a nightmare! My son is the one with crohns, and because he was admitted to hospital last year it has been really difficult to get him insured. I must have phoned a dozen insurers. Some will cover for increased costs, one quoted £800!!! Most won't cover for crohns because of being in hospital.
I have used Insure and Go in the past and thought they were really good, this time they didn't want to know.
Eventually I have found one, Leisure and Lifestyle who will cover. It is still costing £260 for an annual insurance, but the cheapest one I could find.
We are going to Canada in July, so this may well have increased the costs, travelling within Europe may be slightly cheaper.

Our problem is because of Josh being in hospital, even though he was only being monitored, no intervention, apart from endoscopies. As soon as you say you have had a hospital admission in the last two years, your costs sky rocket!

This may well be our last year for going abroad as I can't afford the insurance costs again, and wouldn't travel without insurance. Hopefully as long as he doesn't have any further hospital admissions the costs may come next time we go away.

Hi. If you look on the Crohns and Colitis UK site, there is a list of Insurers they suggest trying. I am over 50 (unfortunately) and bought mine through Saga. They ask questions about the disease, and depending on the answers, will possibly cover you fully. I have managed to obtain full cover, but it depends in whether you have had surgery in the last year prior to applying.

Hope this helps,

Sally

My son has Crohn's and we've used World First for our annual insurance policy. They have been very easy to deal with, responding to all my queries promptly be email.

It was found out last year I had crohns whilst in hospital when they had no idea what was wrong.Anyway it meant I missed a holiday, and I have insurance through my bank account and they paid out,and I have since asked them if im still covered and they confirmed I am,they use AXA for insurance.

Hi Smurfy,
That's good news. However, I would urge you to obtain this in writing from them, as pre-existing conditions are not normally covered. If you get this in writing, it will give you peace of mind. I'm an insurance broker and this will be in the small print if the policy, unless agreed otherwise.

Hope this helps.

Sally
