Last week I was urinating blood for 3 days. I saw the doctor and she took a urine test and a blood test for my kidneys. The blood test came but fine whereas the urine test showed the blood. I've been on trimethoprim for 5 days and did a urine test this morning and there was no visible blood but the doctor did a test and there was blood. I've been sent for an urgent ultrasound on my kidneys.

The doctors are investigating, so don't worry about saying to see a doctor. It's being sorted but I was wondering if anyone else has had this? Urinating blood and the back pains etc? Is it connected to the IBD? Or is my body just being really silly and causing more problems than it needs to? Haha.

Hope everyone is ok! I've got the GI in 9 days and counting!

Blood in the urine is caused by several things but the most common is a urine infection. Having back pain can be associated with this. Your urine can still show blood until the infection has resolved and often only shows on a urinary dip which your doc did.

Ultrasounds show if there are causes for the infection and for other causes such as kidney stones, kidney deformities etc. These scans are normal in probably over 90%of cases.

Don't worry too much as these problems are very very common and very rarely have serious causes...just make you feel really poorly when you get them!

Haven't had this but the symptoms are those of a possible kidney stone, which is why they are doing the ultrasound I imagine. Kidney stones can be more common with Crohns. But hey, it's only a possibility and investigations will rule it in or out. The antibiotics will work if there is a U.T.I., so you are covered there.
Hope you are managing ok.
Take it easy.

Yeah the antibiotics haven't been helping. I've had one or two UTIs in the past and the trimethoprim always works.

In the past I have HSP (last flare was around 8 years ago) which can have an affect on my kidneys which is why they're concerned.

I was just wondering if it's either a symptom of Crohns or not. :)

I doon't think that sounds like Crohn's-could it be a side effect of the medication on your kidneys? Sorry you're going through so much-tell that doctor you need answers ASAP!

I'm not on any medication. I've refused to take any because the strong pain relief and the nausea stopping one because it says on the pack not to take them if you have any kidney problems and we're not sure if I do or not yet so I don't want to risk it!

The only medication I am on is Trimethoprim which is to stop any infections in the body so if it was a simple UTI then it would just get rid of it.

Update - I had my scan today. All my organs are perfectly healthy. That is good news that i'm healthy, bad news that i'm in pain and they don't know why. The lovely doctor said that the scan doesn't look at my bowels or anything linked to that. She can only see my kidneys, pancreas, liver, lungs, urinary track etc. So atleast my kidneys are good! I am seeing a specialist next week for my stomach/intestines/bowel problems. So, we shall see from there. :)
