My dr says I need to get another colonoscopy. I'm a little scared because the last time I did the bowel prep, It made the symptoms worse. Pain, spasms and fever. I had to have medication prescribed for the spasms. I still had a low grade fever when I went in for the colonoscopy. I'm really nervous about having another. Anyone else experience this?

I know its normal to have chills when we drink the big prep tank. I get these and feel generally unwell during the time I have to drink. However, when the tank is finished and all liquid out, I feel great, even some diminution of disease symptoms.

Once I have been given only a few pills to take with a glass or 2 of water as a prep. This happened 4 years ago, and I think this is the most common prep given now. This preparation gave me terrible headache and general malaise. So when I have to do a colonoscopy now, I ask my GI for the big old tank.

which prep do you have? I'd suggest you ask your doctor to prescribe you the other type of prep you haven't tried. may be easier on you.

I know they said it's different now. I can't remember the name of it but it's a prescription and I don't plan on it tasting good.

Has anyone else experienced these symptoms with bowel prep? I'm so scared it will happen again.

The pain and spasms could be because the prep is so harsh. It's designed to push out every last drop of liquid. Then the day after you are sore because you are so empty, your intestines have been through the wringer and generally a difficult time!

Even when we have not eaten for hours, there is still solid matter in there somewhere. With a prep nothing can survive!

My last prep was much milder than my first, but even the next day I had a lot of cramping (in fact, more than during the prep!) because I was so empty, some pain, and my intestines were trying "to go" even with nothing left.

I do hope it is better for you this time but preps are harsh and I think some of what you describe is quite normal to happen sadly.

When you go on for your scope be sure to tell the staff how you are feeling, so they can make you more comfortable where possible.
