Our 18 yr old son was diagnosed w/ Crohns last October after being hospitalized with diarrhea and dehydration.
Since then we have fought the battle so many are fighting. Three GI groups, Pred twice, cdif twice, two hospitalizations, Humira, and few answers,
Our question is related to CDif. He's had it twice now and the second time it's much worse although maybe not affecting his Crohns, which would be awesome since he's on Humira. We're at day 26 on vanco for the Cdif. Anyways, he's sick and won't eat again. A bite of food becomes a meal, maybe. Does anyone know of the best liquid nutrition other than Boost. He can only drink one or so a day and other than that its Gatorade, Powerade, some juice, water, etc, but I feel like he needs more nutrition. Liquids ideas, remedies, whatever? I already bought the Nutri Bullet and even that he won't drink. Is Pedialyte a good idea vs. Gatorade and Powerade? Is anyone else's children not eating?

we use peptamen jr.
you can order from nestle

peptide
you can order from abbott
these are semi elemental

there is ensure ( at target)
resource breeze ( at walgreens)

these are whole proteins so harder to digest

he needs complete nutrition.

Can your GI prescribe a nutitional drink for him? My son was on Modulen, but you need a prescription for that. It might be worth asking about an NG tube for a little while so that the liquid can go straight into his stomach and he won't have to eat or taste it.

I second the NG tube idea. He can learn to put it in and take it out for feedings (or leave it in fulltime, which would be harder for a person his age) if he can't drink the supplements. You might want to read the thread on enteric nutrition in the treatment section of this Parents of Kids with IBD to get more info regarding nutritional treatments.

My husband makes smoothies for my daughter, but she didn't like them. I recommend milk or water kefir or another probiotic in addition to nutritional supplements. Gatorade and pedialyte are only good for rehydration.

I have to agree with the semi-elemental nutrition. My son has a horrible appetite, he just had C-Diff last month and wasn't eating and we went back to mostly Peptide. The first time he had to start drinking them was quite a struggle and we had some power battles and it took 2 hours to drink one but he was soon able to drink them rather quickly and he had the added benefit of me not nagging him about eating.
He found the semi-elementals easier on his system. The Boost/Ensure gave him stomach aches and were hard to drink.
