Can insurance pay the extra cost of a diet?

I was wondering if i can get prescription for gluten free foods, (or any other diet for that matter,) that the price is much higher then the non gluten free equivalent and have my insurance pay?
also is it legal?
 
I have not heard of it either. Usually any 'special' foods would require a prescription for insurance to cover it. You can check with your provider to see if they cover any types of special foods.

This is what my insurance provides, for example -
Enteral Formula
Oral or IV:

Notification is required.

Call: 1-

With notification - 100% of eligible expenses not subject to copayment.

Failure to notify us will result in the application of non-network benefits.

Modified Solid Food Product:

No notification required.

$2,500 annual maximum not subject to annual deductible or coinsurance.
