I know I'm not supposed to take any NSAIDs like Motrin or Advil, but is it ok to take Excedrin if you have Crohns Disease? Or will it tear me to shreds? I have a terrible headache right now and am dying to get rid of it.

Hey Poofed, can you give some detail on any medications or supplements you take to manage your Crohn's?

I know that Wikipedia is not the end all be all, and that it could contain bad info, but it would appear that the safest thing would be codeine, and not an OTC that has codeine in it, but a medicine containing only codeine as the active ingredient. Of course, codeine can be habit forming so if you get frequent headaches you are better of just not taking anything. One benefit of codeine and crohn's is that it slows down your digestive system.

It appears that there is a running theme in all my posts, and that would be think about pot :) It relieves pain and inflammation and is healthy as long as you don't smoke it :)

Acetaminophen is OK... aspirin is not. There are different formulations of Excedrin; if your bottle has just acetaminophen and caffeine you should be OK.

@ChefShazzy again this is coming from Wikipedia, but I read that there are contradictions in literature on the drug about whether Acetaminophen is a NSAID or not a NSAID, although, the article did mention that if you were going to have to make a choice between Acetaminophen and Aspirin with Crohn's, then Acetaminophen is the safer choice.

@Poofed you can also call your specialist when their offices are open and leave a message with the nurse, the nurse will call you back and be able to tell you what you can take for headache since you have Crohn's. I never ever take pain meds for headaches, I don't get many headaches but when I do I just tough it out.

Also, it is helpful to note that caffeine alone has been shown in studies to increase the effectiveness of pain meds, which could suggest that caffeine has as much to do with headache relief as anything. So, if you can drink coffee without it bothering your Crohn's that might be a way to see if the caffeine alone helps.

Acetaminophen is not an NSAID. Aspirin and ibuprofen are. I thought excedrin had acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine, and if that's the case, then you probably shouldn't take it. But if I'm wrong and there's no aspirin, then go for it, I guess!

Feel better.

You may have low hemoglobin levels due to the excessive bleeding in your bowlels. I used to get lightheaded and get headaches but then i got a blood infusion and get iron infusions as well
Haven't had any problems like this since. Meds: Remicade every 4 weeks.
