Hi. I am currently using 2 1000mg of these a day for my Proctitis. I was wondering if you guys might please tell me how many of you either quit using them when you're feeling better or if you continue with the drug? I've done some research but can't find anything that mentions one or the other. Thank you for your input and help:)

Everytime I stopped using them, I generally had inflammation and bleeding again within 3 days. Because of that, I used them everyday. I suspect that is not the case for most people, though.

I have used them for Proctitis for over 6yrs.I use them for maintenance, and only 1 at night.Occasionally I stop using them, usually when I have felt ok for a long while. This eventually ends in a flare, but using them morning and evening puts me back on track once again.I'm lucky as mine is easily managed except for urgency, for which I take Loperomide.I also know which foods I can tolerate.I also have tried to research the meds.but haven't found much help.

I did find a coupon that I was able to print out from Canasa that hopefully I can use for a few refills thankfully. Just got to find out what the doctor is going to want me to do...

I wonder, for those who took 5-ASA both in oral form and via suppositories, do you notice a difference in how it affects you? Are suppositories really superior to oral medication, or are they only prescribed for proctitis?

I'm not sure. But this time around where I've been diagnosed with Proctitis having both seemed to help me. Mainly, it seemed to help with my doing the canasa suppositories twice a day on top of the pentasa.

Suppositories are generally only prescribed for proctitis since the medication can't venture too much further than where the suppository lands inside the rectum.

I wouldn't say that the suppositories are far superior to the pills, but if you have disease in the rectum, they do provide additional relief in addition to taking pills.

For me in particular, taking mesalamine by mouth provided noticeable relief within a few weeks, whereas once mesalamine suppositories were added I noticed improvement after a few days.

I felt more unwell taking oral Asacol.I have Proctitis and was prescribed oral first. It made me feel sick on top of everything else.Suppositories work well for me BUT,my Proctitis doen't seem to have advanced too far since dx 6yrs ago.I do wonder if I have I.B.S as well though
