So this is the THIRD time they've cancelled my reversal - 4th operation overall. It's always two weeks before the scheduled date. This time it's because the surgeons are 'away on holiday' Both of them at once!! If there that important surely then ONE should be there! I mean come on, this MUST be some kind of joke! The last time it was because some inpatient was 'really sick' and needed an op. I could understand that, but telling me 2 weeks in advance was a bit puzzling.. surely if he was that sick they'd operate on them straight away.
Does anyone have any tips on what I can do next? I am 'stable' so in their eyes I'm not an emergency which I understand. However, I am 23 - I know technically age means nothing and you can achieve everything you want with an illeostomy, however I want to go and do an MA in September, and I know with the intensity of the year I won't be able to get it done in that year. Is there any way I can speed up the process? Any tips whatsoever?
I'm angry that they've done this to me yet again. My mother is taking her anger out on me, and quite frankly I'm completely fed up and exhausted from all this..

re erased line.

Hi there, Gracifer,
It is disappointing and upsetting when you are all prepared, and then surgery is cancelled!! I do hope all is sorted out for you soon and you can begin your degree. Make preparations for that even if it is not this year. Having a goal like that will help how you are feeling. Good for you!!!! It is good you are stable.
Do not worry. I was on Budesonide for a year and even though I have Osteoporosis, scan revealed no further deterioration! I am now on Prednisolone, but tapering off to a smaller dose. So, just deal with a day at a time and do not worry. Be kind to yourself as you have been through a lot. Let me know how you are.

Thanks guys. It's been rescheduled for the 17th August with no guarantees it won't be cancelled again. It's exactly a month before I'm meant to be starting Uni so hoping nothing untoward happens...

I know how this feels. I once got as far as having prepped for surgery, been given an enema and everything, only to be sent home because the person being operated on before me had taken longer than expected. They couldn't reschedule me straight away as my surgeon was then on his holiday for four weeks.

But I think it's important to remember that when things get cancelled it's for a reason. When I did get that surgery done, it went on hours longer than expected, so whoever was unfortunate enough to be following me on the surgery list must have got sent home just as I had.

And yes it's annoying when surgeons take their holidays, but to be honest it worries me more that I might get operated on by a surgeon who's worked 12 hours or something already that day than that it get cancelled. Then again, doctors seem to work insane hours, like they have super-human energy or something.

They don't really take into account that patients are trying to live their lives too, we're expected to conform to their schedule.
But one thing I know gets me surgery faster is if I have it right around Christmas and New Year's. I had surgery on December 23rd a few years ago and the wards were empty. Most people don't want non-urgent surgery at that time of year. I realise that doesn't help you now, but if you're prepared to feel ill over the holidays, you won't have much competition for the surgery schedule at that time.

I didn't even need to open the thread to guess you are in the UK! I think most of us under the care of the NHS have had the joys of being cancelled at short notice at least once but it's particularly cruel for a stoma reversal and for that many times IMO.... when mine was reversed I was desperate to get it done and was terrified of it being cancelled.

They gave it a good go though... made me wait most of the day 'for a bed' and had basically resigned myself to it not happening but thankfully it did!

Funnily enough I was meant to be going in for a balloon dilation of the anastomosis tomorrow but that has been postponed to the 17th Aug too!

Anyway, good luck for the 17th and hope it goes ahead!
