I've been trying to eat healthier, I really have. I'm still not the pinnacle of health, but a lot of things have been cut out since my diagnosis. Alcohol has rarely been consumed; I cut out coffee after a particularly bad day a few months back; I've stayed away from salads, most fried foods, steak (red meat in general), and I can no longer have my favorite burritos (I miss hot salsa like you wouldn't believe). That said, I don't consider myself completely deprived -- I can still eat sushi! Avocados, bananas, sardines, sweet potato, cantaloupe & honeydew melon -- all of these have more or less become staples in my diet. I still eat plenty of the low-residue white stuff, which may or may not be ruining my gut, depending on who you ask and what you read -- turkey sandwiches on sourdough bread, pasta, white pizza, regular potatoes (including french fries once or twice a week... I know, I know), etc.

I'm no model of health, but I'm definitely not in the "I can eat whatever I want" camp.

That said, I cheated big time last night. Went out to a local bar with my friends and had a fried fish sandwich (and it had BACON and COLESLAW on it!), fries, and a couple of beers. The beers were dang tasty, I gotta say.

This morning I feel a little meh, but no worse than I usually feel. This disease is so strange.

Anyways, for those of you who do adhere to some sort of stricter diet in order to keep your CD under control, how often do you cut loose and "cheat," if at all?

My diet is not very limited... I can eat pretty much anything without reaction (except popcorn) but I don't. I've cut out coffee, refined sugars, most grains except for white basmati rice, and I don't consume any food that isn't organic and I'm avoiding gluten. I look at the food I eat as medicine for my body. I still have trouble giving up dairy. I'm not lactose intolerant but with the MAP speculation it makes me want to be more cautious. Hard cheese and greek yogurt are really good sources of protein that I enjoy.

With all that said, when I went to DC last week to meet up with my boyfriends family while they were on vacation, we took his niece to some famous cupcake place that she really wanted to go to. I caved and had a cupcake. A cute little bundle of refined sugar and gluten. I suffered no ill effects but I felt bad about it!

I dunno. While I felt guilty for caving in to the sweet smell of confections, I realized that for me, it was no big deal and not something that I make a habit out of. It was completely random and rare and I'm okay.

Interesting that you mention Greek yogurt, as I've been eating a lot more of it as well. I'm interested in the probiotic benefit, so I try to have a cup of Chobani almost every day. Do you stick to plain or do you eat flavored Greek yogurt?

Nice. I tried a dollop of pure maple syrup in it the other day, and it was MUCH tastier. I can eat plain yogurt but it's a lot like work -- like trying to muscle down really thick sour cream.

I use Greek yogurt to make my veggie dip. You can really use it in a lot of sauces and dips to thicken things up. I put a little bit of light sour cream with it to thin it out a smidge and then season as desired. Off topic, but if you're trying to get more, there are a lot of ways to get it!
