So Im fairly young and not in terrible shape. Im generally healthy with the exception of my CD, which is newly diagnosed. Currently I am tappering off Prednisone, which Ive been stable at 3 weeks at 20mgs.....and just gona wait to see if symptoms of CD calm down more. I am getting Remicade and taking all my vitamins. Anyway about a month ago I woke up at 3am with what felt like an elephant sitting on my chest, and when I would breath in or out...it was really sharp. So I laid there for a while (about and hour) and delt with it...it went away. I talked to GI about it a few days later and they said if it happens again go to the ER. Well last night it happened again!! Same thing, dead asleep and wake up feeling as if Im having a heart attack. Not as severe as the first time....but still very painful and lasting about an hour. I did not get up and go....I cant possibly go back to the hospital again....not at three AM!! So I call GP today and she said, get scheduled to see me this week and if it happens before u see me, you must go to the ER. So has this ever happend to anyone because of disease, or med (Pred, or Remicade). Thanks for listening....

Happens to me because I have a heart condition. Sadly Crohn's isn't the only thing we have to deal with. We can get other illnesses just like everyone else. I have Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs) and take a beta blocker for it and I'm only 28 years old. It's easy to say that its just tapering off of this or that or its cause of this other medication but you have to look into other possibilities as well. If it turns out to be the meds, then thank the lord almighty kitty for that but its better to know for sure. I hope you get your heart checked out. Crohn's used to be an old people disease too ya know but there are a lot of heart patients who are even younger than me. Take care and I really hope it turns out to be nothing.

I was searching this site to see if anyone else has had chest pain. My son who is 11 started complaining of bad chest this past Friday, of course after his visit with his GI doc and the surgeon. Tanner did take protonix for several years but after his last scopes and before his surgery his doc said he could stop taking it because everything was great until they got to his colon. So we stopped and now chest pain, so I am wondering is this acid reflux, heartburn or something more? Does this worry EVER end?

If you are having chest pains that come back, persist for more than a couple of minutes, and ESPECIALLY if it feels like an elephant on your chest - GET TO THE ER!!!!!......that is a sign of something more serious going on, like a heart attack or even a pulmonary embolism......not something you should sit around and wait to see if it goes away....when it does - it may be because your heart has stopped!

Hiya Bev
ask your doctor about this condition

Costochondritis is most common in people between 20 and 40 years of age. In most cases, doctors do not know why the condition develops. Trauma to the chest wall may lead to costochondritis, and it also is believed that viral infections, particularly upper respiratory infections, may cause costochondritis. The condition also can occur as a feature of more generalized diseases of inflammation such as certain forms of arthritis, fibromyalgia, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Hope you feel better soon

Thanks friends, my EKG showed normal, and I had a chest x ray done. I will have EEG done soon, but doc thinks its a spasm of my esophagus...which is controlled by antispasmatic meds and pain meds....just what I dont need. Hopefully everything is ok, and it doesnt happen again. None the less if it does happen again...I WILL go to the ER.

I have had this for two different reason. One is gas pains (oh how i miss beer). and the second as was mentioned is Costochondritis from Arthritis.
I have since gotten pain meds and a new softer mattress.
Good luck

I had this come up and it could just be heartburn like it was for me. Talk to your doctor about it. The other option is costochondritis typically.

I have been experiencing chest pain/pressure, as well. My doctor told me the same thing that it was most likely a spasm in my esophagus and the sensation can easily be confused with chest pains. Also, he said it could be more aggravated by stress. And, of course I was stressed out, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. But I tried to relax and things have gotten better. Are you stressed at all?

Complaints of chest pains are taken very serious. So dont feel shy about going to the er. Its like saying you were coughing up blood. They might be able to tell what was wrong during that time after having it. My grandma had it then two heart attacks on the way to the hospital then another there.
