Chrons and kids

you can absolutely have kids with crohn's. however, your kids will have a greater chance of developing ibd.

Some Crohn's medications aren't supposed to be taken while pregnant. If you're planning on more children I'd definitely talk to your doctor about it.

My doc just said I shouldn't get pregnant while I have this much inflammation going on. But, once I get it under control will be fine. True some meds you shouldn't be pregnant and some you can't breast feed while on.

My Crohns was actually better while I was pregnant, actually I have never felt better. Talk to your doctor about your meds and ask the risks if you would become pregnant. Best of luck to you.

I think it also depends on if you have had any operations due to Crohns. I had my two kids before I got REALLY sick and went through hell with so many operations due to Crohns now my dr says that I definatley cannot ahve anymore kids for fear of another abruption. I think that if you are operation free so far you are good to go. When I was pregnant I felt better that any other time in my life, crohns wise but I would also talk with your dr.

Did you have a better time of the CD while you were prego or worse?

My first preg, I felt great the next two, I felt worse.
The CD is the reason I'm not having any more.
If I would've Known before I got preg with any of my 3 that they are more likely to have bowel problems I NEVER would have got pregnant.
I wouldn't purposely risk someone else getting this if I had anything to say about it.

Hindsight is 20/20

i had my kids before i was diagnosed with crohns. only had crohns coming up too 4 weeks. but i really want a couple a more :( really not fair at all if they get crohns too. ANd dont think i could deal with a child who had something wrong. just worry for my other 3 now. no one in my family has crohns tho. Im the 1st. are we hundred percent it is heriditary?:? :'(

oh right!! ahh good cool! no no not wanting one now but definately in the next year or 2!!

My Crohns has always been very severe. I have had three surgeries, all before I had my kids. My doctor never told me not to have kids. My kids were also born by c-section which is the only thing that my ob was a little concerned about he was afraid that I would have alot of scar tissue, but once they went in everything was fine. He actually said that he didn't know what he was afraid of.

As I understand it, the risk of passing on CD or similar is the same as if you have any auto-immune disease - statistically, you're more likely to have a child with an auto-immune disease, but I don't think I've ever seen anything that quantifies that? And it doesn't mean to say that your child will have CD necessarily - he/she could miss it completely, or it could show as asthma, eczema, etc.

I was considering a second child when I was diagnosed, and I was told that there's no way of telling how my CD would be when pregnant - could be better, could be worse, could be just the same.

What I wasn't told was that some drugs (like Imuran) are contraindicated when TTC or pregnant. I fell pregnant nearly 2 years ago, and my doctor's opinion was that I should seriously consider a termination due to the foetal damage that Imuran would have most likely already caused. He also said that in most cases, the pregnancy is not viable. I researched it, and got conflicting information at the time re: foetal damage. As it turned out, it wasn't a viable pregnancy, but I made the decision then not to take the risk of putting myself and dh in the position of having to possibly make a very difficult decision if it happened again.
