My son who is 15 has just been prescribed a two week course of Cipro and Flagyl. The Cipro dosage is 750mg twice a day and Flagyl is 400mg three times a day. I'm concerned that this is a high dose (particularly of Cipro) for someone his age. Am I right to be worried?

That does seem quite high. I think my son had 500mg tablets, but can't remember if it was twice or 3 times a day. If it was three times a day, then it would be the same dose as your son is taking overall. My son found the Cipro quite hard to take and had to give up on them after a couple weeks, but had no problems with the Flagyl.

Cipro should be somewhere between 10-20 mg per kg every 12 hours for the pediatric population. I think it depends what he's being treated for. That does seem kind of high. Can you call the pharmacist and check to see if there was an error?

I would be too. Why don't you ask if you can change it to the 500mg and split it to 3 doses. You could make sure he takes it after food so it doesn't irritate his stomach too much.

Usually Ciprofloxacin, when used in combination with Flagyl, to treat complicated intra abdominal infections the dose is 500mg twice daily. Why is the GP prescribing it? Can you check with the GI re dosing?

The Flagyl dosage is accurate and the common regimen for his condition and age.

Thanks Dusty. They're being prescribed as his CRP and platelets are back up and he's not keen to go back on EN over Christmas. Our IBD nurse faxed a letter to the GP who then prescribed the drugs. GP says that yes it is a large dose but not unusual and as he's 15 he's treated as an adult dose-wise. We're going to give it a go!
