I've been having quite the time lately with this cold virus of mine. So much so that I've been using cough drops like crazy. Since then, I'd been getting a lot of beautiful gas and even a bunch of diarrhea. It's been so stressful lately in my life between work, home renovations and all that I expected that I was in a flare.

Husband and I went to the doctor yesterday because my cold wasn't getting better and just in case it was something else. I listed diarrhea as one of my symptoms. When I was seen and the doctor found out I'd been using the cough drops like crazy, she smiled. Come to find out, cough drops all have a laxative in them (especially the sugar free kind).

I never knew this and wanted to pass it on to you guys in case you didn't know either. Needless to say, there can be too much of a good thing no matter what you have!!! I'm not saying not to use cough drops. I'm just saying not to overdo it like I did!

Cross-stitch, that's very interesting, thanks for the info. I seem to be coming down with a cold myself right now (yes, another one) and I'm sucking on a cough drop as I'm reading your post, ha! I knew that things like sugar-free gum are bad for us and can cause diarrhea, so it's not surprising to hear that cough drops are similar. I will keep an eye on my cough drop consumption and not overdo it. Fortunately I seem to be more congested than coughing right now. I hope we both feel better soon!

Yes, artificial sweeteners in a lot of meds and over the counter remedies. I took some tums on the recommendation of my internist. I was trying to take them for my calcium intake. Put me in a flare and had bloody diarrhea. Sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol all the artificial stuff that ends in "ol". Be careful and read the labels.

I took tums a few weeks ago for tummy relief. It was a mistake.

Even though it's very annoying, and boy is it! I was told that coughing is good and that's what keeps you from getting bronchitis, pnemonia and other worse cases related to colds. If you have to suck on anything, ice is best and drink lots of water. Steam is good from showers too and helps open you up. Basically, it sounds like we're going back to how we used to do things when I was a kid.

Sorry folks. One more thing I was told to lay off was sweets (no sugar). Not an easy thing to do (I know). We've got some pie in the fridge to eat up. Guess that will have to wait...

Cross stitch, when I was a kid , my father told us to take a hot bath or shower when I have a cold.

I was using Ricola as well. I haven't had one since yesterday though. I did cough quite a bit early this morning, but not as much now. I am drinking a lot of water to try to keep myself really well hydrated. Haven't had any cold meds at all besides the Ricola yesterday. I will try avoid sugar as well, and I'll soak in a hot bath when I get home tonight. I don't mind fighting this cold the old-school way! :) Cross-stitch, hope you're doing better today!

I hope that you do feel better. I just wonder now i did not get sick at all this year except for the crohns, i guess im lucky lol. Hope everyone feels better
