Hello,

I have been trying to keep a bit fitter by going to the gym, and to my surprise I found I can run on the treadmill now, have done this twice, but during the evening started to get tummy cramps, really gripping cramps, went to the GP and he gave me antibiotics this was last Thursday, but my ankles were hurting and thought that was the running. Come Monday I had to go to the hospital for x-ray as I had a job to walk, all swollen, thinking I'd damaged myself with the running. The x-ray was fine and the nurse told me to leave the treadmill alone for 6 weeks, yet Ive really enjoyed it. I havent even been able to drive. Thought surely just running twice couldnt do it as I built myself up before I started running.

I have now finished the antibiotics since yesterday, and my ankles have calmed down remarkably, although my left ankle stills hurts a bit, I have been wearing those thrombosis stockings they give you when you are in hospital and found they have helped, (I normally throw them out).

Would anybody know or advise as to wether this may be a combination of my tablets and the running, (which I think it is) or to do with my crohns as I understand it can affect joints. I have been using the gym for 6 weeks, via my GP.

Perhaps you should start more slowly, try the rowing machine for a while. Let your ankles get used to a bit of work again.

The only time I had unexplained joint pain it was only in one ankle and felt like I sprained it. It has happened twice. The first time I had an xray and there was nothing there, but they gave me an anti-inflammatory if I remember correctly. The next time it happened I figured it was the same thing so I just lived with it and it cleared up on its own eventually.

I would try walking instead of running after you heal up. And maybe after a few weeks of walking with no problems, just try a light jog for a very short time in the middle of your walk to see if it comes back. That way you can work up to the running or rule it out.

Good luck - hope you feel better!

Some antibiotics can cause connective tissues to become weak and tear. I do not remember the details but the FDA was going to require warnings on the problem antibiotics.

Apparently it was Tendon damage that is connected to any flouroquinolone antibiotic.

Fluoroquinolones are a class of synthetic antibiotics which have a broad spectrum of antibiotic activity that includes both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. Some of the more common ones are Levoquin (levofloxacin), Ciproxin (ciprofloxacin) other common drug names are Baloxin and Tequin, and common chemical names are enoxacin, lomefloxacin and norfloxacin. In the literature many side effects have been documented including tendinitis and subsequent tendon rupture. The incidence is felt to be between 0.14%-0.4% but if someone has other health conditions, the incidence can go up to 15.6%. Advanced age seems to be the most significant risk factor. Long periods of hemodialysis, diabetes mellitus, hyperparathyroidism, rheumatic diseases, gout, and corticosteroids are other predisposing factors.1,2
