Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

I believe the current statistics are 20% but I believe there are so many things that can effect that. Just because you have the gene for Crohn's doesn't mean that you will develop Crohn's. It is generally believed environment also plays a part.
My husband and my older son both have Crohn's but no one else in the extended family has it.

My son has the same. We had no problems until he got the swine flu and just didn't seem to get better from there. Was that the trigger that set the disease in motion for him, if not for that would he have never developed Crohn's, unfortunately we have no way of knowing.
I don't know if that changes the chances as even in identical twins it is 55% that they would both have Crohn's so I would think there has to be more to it then just genetics.
I still totally understand the worry as we went through it all before we had kids.

I'm curious about the genetics involved with Crohn's. Can we get tested to see if my children got it from me or from my husband? What can they tell, exactly?

The Prometheus IBD sig diagnostic tests for genetic markers associated with Crohn's. My son's test shows testing on 4 different markers and he has a gene mutation in 3 of those associated with Crohn's disease.
I guess it would tell you if you have the genetic marker for Crohn's disease but it is a pretty expensive test and it could still show that neither you or your husband has any of those genetic markers.

I did not test my non IBD kiddo because even if he has the markers it doesn't mean he will develop Crohn's and didn't want that genetic information out there on him, probably would never make a difference but what if somewhere, sometime somebody says - No you can't do that you have tested positive for the Crohn's gene.

Most studies state that if one parent has Crohn's then a child has 10% chance of developing it. If that child does develop Crohn's and they have a sibling then the sibling has a 30% chance of also developing Crohn's.

Problem is there are so many variables in life...

Neither my husband or I have Crohn's but both of our children do. They surely lucked out on the 30% chance! But on the positive they are both doing well and they have each other. :)
