I am new to this forum site but have a question. I had been dealing with pain in my abdomen for about three weeks before it became unbearable about three weeks ago. I went to the emergency room because I could barely move. I seriously thought I was dying. I am not trying to be over dramatic but it was horrible. They did CT scan and saw definite inflammation in my ilieum. My specialist put me back on prednisone. (This is my first flare up in two years). I had to have another colonoscopy which came back with a lot of scar tissue in my ilieum. I am still having severe pain and doc says that the prednisone doesn't seem to be working. He's suggesting remicade? I'm severely constipated and the pain doesn't seem to go away. What if anything can I do for the pain.

Welcome to the forum!

We have a section for Remicade, as well as a support group here if you have any questions. I've also been on Remicade so you can feel free to ask me anything, too. :)

At the hospital, did your specialist mention anything about a potential obstruction?

For constipation, you could try adding fibre to your diet, taking fibre supplements, or psyllium husks. There are also a number of OTC medications you can try to help you (Miralax, Docusate Sodium/Calcium, Linzess), but before you try any of these, consult with your doctor to see if these are okay with your condition.

After the colonoscopy he didn't say anything about obstruction except for the fact that there is definite scar tissue build up. Which is making it hard for things to pass through. He has me adding fiber powder to my drinks and it really hasn't helped so I took a couple laxatives the other day, which did help but its already about 4 days later and will have to do it again. But the pain in general hasn't subsided. He still has me taking the prednisone until I can get on the remicade and I am taking vicodin as needed. which is about 3 times a day. Will the remicade help with pain, and does it cause weight gain. Unfortunately I'm a chubbie chronie.

I still wonder if the pain is from a possible blockage, since you're dealing with constipation and mentioned a build-up of scar tissue. There's a thread where people discuss what it feels like here, if you want to take a look.

I regularly take Miralax (half a capful every two days) to help regulate my constipation problems. I found fibre to be unhelpful for me, personally. It might be a possibility that the vicodin is making your constipation problems worse.

Remicade helps with inflammation, and if the pain is caused by inflammation it should help deal with that. Remicade never caused any weight gain for me, either.

The scar tissue build up is probably the cause for your constipation. Since the powder didn't work, you might need to try something else. Are you set to go back to your GI anytime soon? Did he say what he intends to do about the scar tissue?

I'm due to go back here shortly to see about the remicade. He just said that surgery will be inevitable but seeing if it gets worse... I dunno. He said that's why I have the constipation also. I'm so used to having the D that I just hate this and the pain that comes with.
