I have read that Izzi's Crohn's is a disability and that she may qualify for financial help. NY is terribly confusing...it seems that you have to have a ridiculously low income in order to qualify-anyone been through this before or can you tell me where/how to get started?

I'm pretty sure it all depends on the severity of her crohn's. I know that you can go online and apply for disability. They will more than likely give you a hard time b/c of her age. Most likely she will be denied the first time and you will have to appeal it. Once she has been denied you can contact a disability attorney and they will handle the case for you (submitting medical records, etc). And the attorney's usually only get paid if she gets approved for disability. The disability office would take the attorney's pay out right off the top and then deposit or send your payment. I do know that now days you don't recieve the full amount of back pay, they send it to you every few months. And back pay is done by the first day you file.
Hope this helps.

Check out the Disability section and the SSI section. My mom got me SSI benefits when I was a child. In order to receive SSI you must be both disabled and not be able to pay your medical bills. Most people can't pay their medical bills especially if its a chronic illness that requires life long medication. So no matter your assets and the amount of money you make, if you cannot pay your medical bills and you have a doctor claiming that the child's illness is disabling then you should be approved for SSI which will also get her Medi-Cal/Medicaid which is basically government run free health care.

Most people are denied the first time they apply so please do appeal. You may not need an attorney but having one does speed up the process of getting benefits.
