d-mannose/scd

After reading the uti post and Dan's info on d-mannose I googled it to find more information and the first one I clicked onto was Elaine Gottschall's Breaking the Vicious Cycle. Dan, I was wondering if you or anybody has tried sc diet. I looked at it when I was sick but it looks like it would be very hard to follow. Just wondering if taking parts of it would help someone stay in remission.
I found the info on xylitol and d-mannose very interesting as I chew a lot of gum and I eat a lot of fruit. The only fruit that I pass quickly is cantaloupe and mango and I have to eat a lot of it.
So any specific carbohydrate diet stories?

I have never tried the diet as I only react badly to two foods that I am aware of. Onions and milk. Coffee was also a problem for awhile, but that was due to H-Pylori infection. Once I got rid of that I could drink it again, after I healed up.

For some reason, when my stricture was blocking the passage of food, any fruit that was acidic, like strawberries, would trigger a gag reflex. I have no explanation for that but after surgery that went away.

I think diet can help with Crohn's, since diet can make it worse, it only stands to reason that it can also improve it. But, unless you have some kind of specific intolerance, I think it is a symptomatic treatment. I think it is likely that it could improve symptoms, but does not address the cause directly.

The diet does seem like it would be hard to follow. I do not know of anyone who has actually tried it.

I tried the diet for a while, it seemed to help. Problem with it is that I do not believe that all the foods actually get rid of the symptoms. Meaning everyone is somewhat different and eggs may cause inflammation for you and eggs are on the diet.

Also starches like potatoes may pose no inflammation and those are not on the diet. If you are serious about trying the diet I would recommend an elimination diet. That way you know what should and should not be on your diet. The SCD is really restrictive(When you are used to the American Fast Food diet), that it would be overall more constructive to just figure out what exactly in your diet is getting the inflammation up.

And even that may not help entirely, you may have a stricture which would cause a problem with high fiber foods even though they would not cause inflammation. Its all a big amount of guess work. If you have the stamina for the SCD I would think an elimination diet only one step away and work better. Thats in summery.

Thanks for the input. I haven't had any problems since surgery 4 years ago but I am always on the outlook for nutritional info to remain in remission. I believe nutrition is very important in the cause and effect of any illness. Many of these autoimmune diseases are more prevalent to western society.
