So I had quit my job and had to reapply for medical coverage with the carrier I have had practically my entire life. Today I got a letter stating that my husband was approved, but I was denied. What the hell? How could they deny me when they have always covered me? I was anticipating it but still pisses me off. The letter does state that if I am currently a member I will still be covered if I continue to pay my premium. What does that mean, didn't I just get denied? I am a bit confused by that.

So, my next step is sending them a letter for reconsideration. I just don't know what to write In it. Please help me!

Sorry Teeny, I can't help, but just wanted to give you support! I find that a strange system. It makes me grateful for our system and we are lucky with a good insurance company. I am sure when my husband retires, could be a different story.

I cannot believe with all the money the Americans pay in Insurance they have the right to deny a continuing patient... it doesn't make sense and it is very cruel. My heart goes out to you. Hopefully someone with knowledge in this field can help you. Good luck ok.

Can't you call them and ask them what the letter means and also ask why you were denied? I'd also ask them what you need to do to get coverage again. If it was coverage through your work but you quit, I don't see why they would have to continue coverage but if it's separate from work then try giving them a call.

You should qualify under the COBRA law. I found this info on a quick google search:

Q: Do you qualify for Cobra if you quit?

A: Under COBRA law, an employer with more than 20 employees must offer continuation of their group health insurance to an employee and their dependents when a qualifying event occurs. Quitting your job is a qualifying event.

Good luck!!

Consult a lawyer. Your company may have violated your rights according to the Americans with Disabilities Act and Obama's new law.
Insurance companies love to hide behind legal language the average person doesn't understand. My friend worked for an insurance company and said they automatically send rejection (her word, not mine) letters when someone quits or is fired, doesn't matter which. The letters are automatically generated, without anyone reviewing it.
Many lawyers offer a free consultation, and it is illegal for insurance companies to reject you for seeking legal advice.

UPDATE: I can get COBRA but was trying to apply for coverage that is cheaper and I guess they don't want me to do that. They said I need to use the COBRA first which costs twice as much. STUPID
