taylorville,
I have been suffering Crohn's symptoms since May. I have been to the doctor and ER numerous times. They were convinced it was my gallbladder, however it turned out it is normal and functioning just fine. My older sister was diagnosed with Crohns 2 months ago, so my doctor had some labs done and scheduled an EGD and Colonoscopy. The colonoscopy and EGD show no signs of Crohns, only a gross inflamation in my stomach and a hiatal hernia. In the meantime my 17 year old son has developed all the same symptoms, so he also had the labs done 2 weeks after i did. I am looking at our lab results and mine was a crohns prognastic, while my son's was an IBD sgi diagnostic. His came back positive for Crohns. My doctor believed i also have Crohns by the results of mine, however the doctor who performed the procedures says no. My question is can you tell if I have Crohn's from the prognastic? Shouldn't it have been the IDB diagnostic that was ran on me? The nurse insisted that they were the same test, however from everything i have read i know they aren't!

they are different test. the diagnostic test is to determine CD, UC, or non IBD by looking at certain genetic markers and stuff like that. THe prognostic test is used to determine if you are more likely to have major problems from CD, that test is usually only done once the diagnosis have been made not to diagnose.

Is it possible for you to see the same GI that your son is seeing and ask them to do the diagnostic test? If not I would seek a second o opinion.

Greetings and welcome.

Earnellzwifey gave a good description. :) Here's a link that describes the prognostic test a little and here's our wiki entry on the diagnostic test.

With so much Crohn's going around, you may want to request they perform a test such as a capsule endoscopy on you to see if there is disease in the area of the small intestines the colonoscopy and endoscopy can't reach.

Please keep us updated as to how you're doing. We're here to help in any way we can.

Hi Loriann,

I can't offer much insight into your illness but just wanted to say you're not alone in diagnosis confusion (I myself am in this club) and congratuliations on approaching this forum, which has been more of a revelation to me than any test or doctoral diagnosis thus far.
