Hello, Don't you just hate it when a doctor tells you to wait and see.I have had a fissure for almost a year now, and at times can be very painful.They have tried the antibotics route..Flagyl and Cripo. one at a time and then together.They didn't work at all.My family doctor is very hesiate to do anything unless she talks to my GI.Problem is now my GI has moved away and my family doctor wants me to wait to see another GI[referral], that could be months to get.I just want this damm fissure gone.Sometimes I wish my family doctor had one and see how she likes it

:pIKA:

Try soaks and just try to keep the area moist. I hate fissures and that was the only thing that helped me. I had three fissures with fissures coming off of each one. Yeah it was strange. Antibiotics did not work for me either so I stopped taking them and just did what I wanted to do. I would not advise that route. Good luck.

Aww, I hope it gets better for ya. A lot of doctors that aren't GI's are terrified of Crohns I think...Luckily my family doc doesn't mind and does the best he can. But there are a lot of doc's who are like that. And I know how frustrating it can be when u are the one dealing with it and feel like there's no solution. Hugzzz to ya.

Darn Fissures

HI
I too am still dealing with these freagin fistulas.Ive had 2 side by side on my right butt for like 4 months.My GI says he is waiting for the surgeon to call.WEll that was 3 months ago and im still waiting. I too was on cipro and flagel which made me feel sick all the time. The remicade slows down the draining for about 4 wks. Try some VSL#3 that helps me a bit.Have you noticed with each bowel movement you have they seem to drain more? If I dont go for one day (which is rare)they dont drain as much.
You should talk to Ruth on Fistulas, she had setons put in.She knows alot about them.
I disagree with Jeff (SORRY)He said try to keep them moist. Soakin them in epsom salts yah I agree. But why would you want too keep them moist?You want to keep them dry then they are not so painfull.And you wanna keep pushing on them so they can drain.If you can. I had to prick mine with a needle because they were getting big and that was the only way to release some of the pressure.There was no way I was gonna go to emerge so they can lanse them. Too painfull and they just fill right back up again.So I guess we will both wait for those darn Drs. too call.

There seems to be alittle confusion here. Fistulas are as you describe Tammy and are extremely painful, they are unusual tracks that usually go from 1 part of the bowel to another or to the outside of the body as Tammy describes. These were like mine but I also had internal horseshoe fistulas which are extremely painful. It is also true that its important to try and keep them dry and clean. Fissures as I understand are tears in the bowel wall, I apparen tly have one of these now, although mine is in my rectum and is only small so should heal on its own. If they can't heal on their own you are generally given creams or antibiotics. Is this what you have Maggie-Muffin or is it a fistula?

Ruth

Hi Ruth I was told it was a fissure and my isn't small, it's about 4inches long.Actually I have had it lanced twice now to relieve the pressure.That I don't want done again [not very pleasant]

:pika:

Oh dear, that must be painful. Do you get a build up of puss with fissures sometimes as well then? Trying to understand how you lance a tear or rip in the bowel. . . ..sorry, don't mean to be a pain.

Hi Ruth,I don't mind at all.I really can't tell you how they do it.It swelled up quite big and they lanced it and took some gross stuff out of it. Mine usally always drainig gross stuff[puss and I don't know what you would call it and blood not alot of blood but some].But every once in awhile it will quite draining and fill up.My GI said it was a fissure, but I honesty don't know what the h+++ it is.So far I have had it lanced twice in out-patients at the hospital.What makes it keep filling up? any suggestions

Fistulas

Maggi-Muffin
IHave 3 right now.My Dr. told me they are called fissures. If you only have one it is called a fistula. Log time ago when I first developed one fistulae they lanced it and it hurt like hell I almost jumped off the bed.They didnt even freeze it. Felt like he took one of those small exactor knifes and just sliced it so it could drain and then some blood.Then it healed up to fast and started to get bigger and bigger and painful and painful so they had to lance it again. ooooowwwwwww
then it closed up again so thet put a kinda like string or twine but thicker from your bumhole to the fistulae so it could drain. And I remember that I had to keep pulling on the string untill about 6 wks.went by and so did the string. I guess as it was healing it would also push the string out.
I finally got the call from the surgeon today about discussing what we are gonna do with the 3 I have now but, my appoitment isnt till march 27th i believe. Im still kinda scared because if he decides to lance them again I just dont no if I can handle that amount of pain again. Wait and see I guess :(

Tammy, thats where the confusion is, your doc lol Look on Wikipedia, a fissure is a tear in the bowel wall and multiple fistulas are called fistulae. I bet you have a fistula maggie-muffin. It may be they call them different things in different countries but that certainly sounds like a fistula to me.

Ruth

Hi Tammy,yes it does hurt to have it lanced.I had mine froze and that won't like you won't believe, having a neddle jab into it.I would have kicked someone in the head if I could have.I think they are hoping it disappears on it's own..can't see that happening.
Ruth thank you ,thanks what I suppected it was too, now how to get rid of the thing
~~~HUGS~~
I HATE the wait and see type Dr's. I also hate Dr's that make you wait to be seen. In the mean time they get to live a perfectly normal life being able to do what ever they want & we can't get 10 feet away from a toilet!
Hell I cant even sit right.Its been 4 months now And I finally see the surgeon Mar 27th cant wait.
I dont think they will disappear on there on. Your gonna have to see a surgeon. Because noway Im gonna get 2 lanced at the same time.Last time I almost did try to jump off the bed the nurse had to hold me down. Its almost like they treat you like some kind of animal. LOL No warning no nothing They just jam that needle in you. I dont no whats worse the freezing or no freezing Ive had both.Not this time its gonna be lights out for me.Im gonna tell the DR. too. Its just to dam painful. I mean we are already in enough oain and its like they wanna cause us more pain. Sometimes I think to myself what if the postions(sp?) were changed.How would they like a needle jammed in there fistula. LOL Just to give them an Idea on what its like. I mean we already suffer enough with having CD and all the wonderful side effects that come with having CD. THere Thanks I also got to vent a bit. The pain is bad today Time for a pill.
Later :eek: :ymad:
Kc mike, that was funny, wish we could do that with ours too. Thanks for the laugh, needed that.Tammy I really don't blame you having them lanced is no fun.I know what you mean it can be painful to sit sometimes..Thats probally be what I have to have done too, just don't like the thought of surgery again.But this thing has to go.Tammy good luck on your up comming surgery.
:panda:
Hi Tammy,forgot to add, glad you posted.nice to know I am not the only one that is having trouble with fissures.I agree they are damm painfull to have.It's pure torture to sit on a cold car seat. Take care
:panda:
I seriously hope you two get sorted out. I remember the pain from my fistulas and it was excrutiating, I even went in through accident and emergency twice they were that bad. I couldn't get comfortable at all, I couldn't walk, sit, lay down, they were that painful, so I totally feel sorry for you guys. My GI was right I guess in that resting my bowel and having a stoma would help them as mine have now totally healed. Lets hope you both have the same positive results. Oh and if surgery is the only option, its really not that bad and lets face it, if it gets rid of the fistulas or fissures then why not?
