Does anyone else take Sulfasalazine?

Does anyone else take sulfasalazine to control their crohns? I know its an old drug now but does seem to work for me.

I was put on sulfalsalzine at the begining of this year by my rheumatologist along with methotrexate as I was still having bad joit pain and stomach pain. I have just gone up to taking 6 tablets of sufasalazine a day but I am still having a few issues and might have to make medication changes (no idea what there is left) but it has helped a bit.

I'm taking sulfasalazine too.(3gm daily) I don't notice much in the way of side effects, and a recent colonoscopy indicated histological remission, so I'm pretty happy with it. I suspect it may be most effective for people with relatively mild colonic disease, which would probably describe me.
I also suspect there is also probably an unintentional bias associated with forums in general. People who are still struggling with their medical issues are more likely to go scouring the Internet for answers, whereas those whose disease is milder/easily controlled/ symptom free are less likely to participate, and hence are less represented
So successful reports of sulfasalazine use may go unreported..

I wasn't convinced sulfasalazine was right for me, I was on it when I had my last major flare up! I I'm happy to say if you take it regularly (I'm terrible for forgetting to have the full daily amount) it does seem to calm things down. Just been 36 hours with needing the toilet! Been years since that happened. It does make me wee neon yellow tho lol. Small price to pay....

Hahaha forgot about the neon yellow wee, I took sulfasalazine many years ago and it worked for me for a good while, yes the key to all the 5-ASA's is that you have to try and remember every dose for it to be effective, I am terrible as well even after 26 years for remembering every dose, with a busy life, work, kids or even sometimes just being to tired can all play their part. Just remember that sometimes our bodies can become almost immune to meds taken over long periods of time and they can loose their effect or the location of the inflammation can change so that particular med may not be absorbed at the correct location needed, always talk to you GI if you feel that your current 5-ASA/mesalamine isn't given you relief, I have bounced back and forth between them all over the years as my crohns has required.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's when I was 17 and I took Azulfidine, which worked great through my college years until I was 22 and needed intestinal surgery. After my surgery, I had a long remission when I wasn't on any Crohn's meds. When my symptoms returned, I tried the azulfidine again but it did not work.

My suggestion for anyone taking this medication is to drink a lot of water while on it because it is a sulfa drug.
